How many people out there really like New Year's Eve, and how many others find it to be the most over-rated holiday on the calendar? What percentage of your lifetime New Years Eves have been truly memorable?

When I was young, I used to find New Year's one of the most exciting holidays. The most memorable was when I had sex with 18 different people over a New Year's weekend (this was many years before AIDS--in fact, it was before Stonewall). Now I don't even bother to stay awake till midnight.

I think as I am getting older, I am finding that most holidays are overrated. I am in my late 30's and am finding that spending the day by myself or with friends is okay. I think it is part of being gay that you develop different types of holiday traditions where you almost prefer to spend holidays with friends as opposed to family because (at least in my mind) your friends are you family.

I did actually go out last night for New Years Eve for the first time in 4 years. I did have a good time and do not regret it. It was an enjoyable evening and I would do it again next year.

Most holidays are over-rated if you let them be. If, however, you choose to set aside the day and make it special then it will be a memorable holiday. If you invest no effort it'll be just another day on the calendar.

But that can be said for every day on the calendar. ;-)

I stopped "celebrating" New Years many years ago. The older I get, the more averse I am to crowds. Plus, this particular holiday is when all the amateur drunks are out. :+

This NY was pretty memorable for me, as holiday's go. A bottle of champagne, a warm body to cozy up with, and Dick Clark from Times Square (on 3-hour tape delay, natch). Well, OK, Dick Clark didn't add much to the festive mood but the warm body sure did, and we were both drooling over Mario Lopez. }(

As someone who loves New Year's Eve I look foward to it every year, it's means that the DAMN Christmas holidays are over and all your Visa & MC bills will be cumming in very soon. I for one for 15 years always went to Times Sq and had a blast, never to old for that. Can also check out all the young drunk guys, the best was after midnight and a few of the "HOT DRUNK BOYS" cumming back to my hotel room to finish the EVE. Even enjoyed all the ass grabing that was done to me on Times Sq, I found out later they were only looking for my walletx(, thank god I always left it in the hotel room safe.

Now after 9/11 I'm not to big on NYC on New Year's Eve in Times Sq, I liked what Deej said: A warm body to cozy up with but with me it was some wine in the hot tub and a hot boy with Mr Bubbles. Oh yes also drooling over Mario Lopez nude in my mind:P

When in doubt I whip it out:+

I generally dread New year's Eve as it almost always is a letdown. I usually end up thinking at mid-night that there must be a better party somewhere else and why am I not at it. But last night took me by surprise.

After a three day skiing holiday which fizzled because of poor weather, I was ready for the Montreal stripper bars! I got there early so I could hop to another if the first did not please. Started at Campus and was disappointed that it just seemed like any other night, no special enertainment or spectacles on stage. Although I had a few lap dances, the guys just seemed to be into making $$$ and that was it. So I went to Stock, only to discover that it was Ladies Night and the place was packed with themx(

Soooo, I ambled along to a leather/jeans type of bar (Stud) and it was packed but, unfortunately, full of trolls:-( :-(

Soooo, in desperation (it was now 10 minutes to midnite), I went to a hustler bar (Le Track) and lo-and-behold, there was a cute guy I met last summer in the park, and he was ALL ALONE (but not for long}( )

I bought him a tequila shooter and we had 2 more as mid-nite tolled. We then promptly left the bar and returned to my home, where we had some wonderful sex!! Oh, the New Year's was JUST FINE!!!:+

I actually enjoy New Year's Eve. Ever since I was in High School (a VERY long time ago ;)) my parents have thrown a New Year's Eve party. It's gotten a little smaller over the years, as people have died or moved away, but it's the one time of the year when my ENTIRE family is together. It's actually very nice. (My parents are getting on in years, and I hope and pray that my siblings and I continue to tradition once my parents are gone.)

I did Times Square once when I was in college. I thought that it was a little over-rated. It was too cold and too crowded and there was no place to to go to the bathroom. I couldn't wait to get home.

Use a cup if you have one if not have your friends do a circle around you and do you thing, just don't piss on your friends ass.

What does Rick like, drooling or drool-free:9

It's nothing special for me. I stayed at home, drank vodka and cranberry juice, and played video games until 2:30 a.m.

It's what I do most nights when I don't have to work the next day.

...Hoover

p.s. I did take a break at midnight to call a friend and say, Happy New Year! So, I wasn't a total party pooper. :)

I'll add my vote to the "I hate New Year's Eve" tally... everybody's trying to have such a blow-out good time. Overpriced events, second-rate bands, and it's usually pretty boring, with everyone watching the clock waiting for the big moment so they can go home. Oh, what a terrible attitude! Maybe I've just never found the right party... if I could find that party with Mario Lopez :9 that could be altogether different!! Or more likely I should just admit I'm not much of a party boy and the "NYE" scene's just not for me.

New Year's Day, on the other hand, is another matter. I really like this holiday. A couple of people I know have gatherings at their houses every year in the afternoon, and we all just hang out and have a good time without much of any expectation. This is more my speed, and these are the New Year's I remember most fondly.

I followed my preferred New Year's Eve plan - kiss my husband at midnight in the middle of an orgy. This goes way back to a series of happy Eves in Denver at a bath house that, unfortunately, no longer exists. It had a twenty foot indoor waterfall into the pool, a maze of caves for a steam room and a big rig's front end, complete with sleeper in the basement. If you approach an orgy in the right frame of mind, you can see it as a community building event, a spiritual refreshening, and a promise of many warm, naked hugs for the rest of the year. Are you having a bad celebration or just the wrong one. Invent your own meaningful rituals and they will be meaningful to you.

If I'm alone it's overrated. If I'm in love and with my love object, it's one freaking beautiful celebration. This year (as well as last) I got lucky (no, not THAT Lucky!)and am basking in wedded bliss! Happy New Year all.:p

Where And How

In recent New Years, I have been at a circuit party, was on a date with someone I ended up living with, I spent a quiet evening with friends, and this past Wednesday, I spent it with a couple, clients. I like champagne, it is one of my favorites beverages and this holiday provides a "good reason" to imbibe. However, I agree with Deej, I would hate to drive and, on the occassions I have been out in public, I have taken cabs for the sake of safety.

New Year's derives from a celebration of the winter solstice. I don't may much attention to Dec 31/Jan 1 (nor to Dec 25, for that matter) and instead prefer to note the moment of the solstice itself.

I miss the long days of summer, so I find the solstice a nice symbolic turning point.

Like everything else, it's "what you make it." Or maybe to be more accurate, "it's who you're with AND what you make it." ;)

I've never been big on NY's Eve celebrations, but these last two new years have been 2 of the very best--because of who I was with. New Year's Eve is an excuse, a reason to do something out of the ordinary-- but what made it special was the person I was with--we simply had fun.:*
