We have a similar thing in Australia (PayID), it works with any bank but you have to register with your bank. You can use an e-mail, phone number or ABN (Australian Business Number). I'm not sure we've had it for, but I don't think it's as long as Canada. It's not anonymous so I've found out escorts' real names, but they didn't seem to care (one I know doesn't care at all).

A similar system, called FPS (fast payment service), exists in Hong Kong.  It works using a bank account, a mobile phone, or a FPS ID. In Mexico (yes, in Mexico) you can e-transfer funds between bank accounts using a system called SPEI (Sistema de Pagos Eléctronicos Interbancarios). 

In both places transfers work 24/7 and are basically instantaneous. 🤷🏻‍♂️

When it comes to retail banking Canada has always been ahead of the US with technological innovations. I credit this to the number of small banks in the US compared to only 6 chartered banks in Canada (there are smaller niche banks but they don’t generally serve the public for all their banking needs). 
Same with credit cards.
