It seems to be more prevalent with younger guys, at least that's my impression.  I never came across it during vanilla play in the 80s.  Today it seems to be more mainstream than kink.

I was talking to a pup (while he was wearing his mask) about this last night. He said he finds the anonymity very liberating. He has a very high level corporate job in Manhattan and can do things as a pup that he would never feel comfortable doing without the mask.
