I live in Japan/Tokyo and today I chatted a guy on Grindr, who said he was an escort. I asked about his service, and he named his activity, the gave me his price with US dollar. I said I don’t have dollar, with that I just meant I don’t have us currency, but he must have thought I am poor, and after saying “you have shitty face” and blocked me immediately.  Probably it was a good thing, because it would be horrible to have sex with someone who take me as disgusting, but at the same time, it is very weird to give a quote in US dollar to a local….. is it US thing?? For us it is almost Trumpean…

I wonder how the experiences of  fellow clients in non US countries are…

Sorry that happened to you.

Assuming that you communicated in English, he may have assumed that you were a visitor from the US or Europe and travelling with US$.

Certainly you’ve now learned how important it is to communicate your wishes and desires with precision. Perhaps if you’d asked “I do have Yen but do you prefer US$?’ You might have enjoyed a good date.

Agree, and I find it tacky when escorts assume that you would want to pay in their currency. You are in Japan, so you are entitled to expect a JPY price. Perhaps ask for their rate in yen. At the least, tell them that they are not in the US.

Well though my profile says. A Japanese living in a suburb….  And escorts from other countries than US have given the price in Yen….  That is the reason why I brought up Trump….

but yeah you might be right, he just doesn’t have intellect or imagination that other countries have other currencies….

I've only ever hired one US escort in Australia, and he was someone I had hired in the US. We didn't discuss the rate before the session and he had no idea what the going rate was here, and I offered him his US rate (I had USD as I travel there from time to time), and he was happy with that. It's an unusual case and different from yours, but paying in USD can work if you have them and are prepared to go that way. But they have no right to expect payment in their currency.

I think he saved you a bad meeting. When traveling, I always clarify which currency we're discussing. Often, the provider will quote us in US dollars, but it's always good to clarify.

Many guys I hired when traveling in Mexico asked to be paid in U.S. dollars.  It didn't make much sense to me since it seemed like they would lose money in currency conversion, but they seemed to think it was financially advantageous for them to be paid in U.S. currency.  Only one refused pesos, though, after I told them that I wasn't traveling with enough U.S. currency to cover the cost.  For the one who insisted on U.S. dollars, fortunately I had befriended a fellow American and he exchanged some dollars for pesos for me.

I would note the op did not meet this escort through RM. Rather on Grindr. I wouldn’t consider escorts on that platform as having the same professional approach as those on RM.
Personally I only use RM as it is a site dedicated to escorts and their clients.

It makes sense to me that foreign providers of a service to Americans which includes escorts would want US dollars for their work. They are no different from others who trade with Americans and receive greenbacks for their business.
All these dollars accumulate in foreign countries and are hoarded for their investment value. If things go south ( no pun intended) in their local economies they always have US bucks to fall back on.

I think it also depends on the extent to which the USD is part of the financial ecosystem in the country concerned. From my observation, the USD features in local people's lives in some Latin American countries (and is perhaps preferred to the local currency) in a way that it does not in most western countries. Few if any businesses in Australia would accept payment in USD cash.

I had a Swedish escort in Mexico ask for me to pay him in U.S. dollars.  I was ready to pay him in Mexican pesos, but he gave me a discount to pay him in U.S. dollars.  He said it was more convenient for him to exchange U.S. dollars into Euros than to being Mexican pesos back to Europe to exchange for Euros.  If it matters (I didn't think it does, but the original poster brought it up) President Trump was in his first term in office then.

I had a US client pay me in US$ because he didn’t have GBP on him. It was fine, I just calculated the exchange rate and he paid me in $. Similar has happened with a client from Europe who paid in €. I’ve still not exchanged them for £ because they’ll be useful for when I travel.

Since the US$ is the reserve currency for the world economy then it is accepted almost anywhere. In some countries there’s a parallel economy where transactions (both in cash and digitally) are conducted in $ rather than the official currency because the local currency is so weak. I know we can’t discuss politics but this is economics so I’m going ahead to say it: this is one of the reasons the US has that trade deficit Trump is trying to address. The $ is overvalued because it’s the reserve currency.

Well afterwards. I found him on rentmen; and shared my complaint, and got immediately blocked (of course.) I found a thread about this guy, and it seems like his behavior was not just to me,  but quite often he behaves similarly, though the issue was not currency.

Unless the Mexican locals knew of places to get more from the US dollars than I did as a tourist, the places accepting dollars there always gave a worse exchange rate than available from my bank via ATMs.  I doubt that many, if any, of these men were well off enough to just hold onto the money they were earning, so I don't think they were stockpiling US dollars as investment.  This all did occur during a time when the peso was losing value relative to the dollar, though, so I guess it makes sense that some of them thought that even if they held onto the dollars for even a short period of time they would be ahead.
