Well...  this gets even more interesting by the day I suppose.

Jestwink has attempted to escalate this further.  I happen to poke by the PO Box today and received the following letter.  I've scanned it in its entirety without any masking.

I'll just add a few comments here...

  • I've reviewed this with my lawyer and he literally laughed out loud after reading it.
  • I checked the California Bar's website and there are exactly 5 names anywhere near "Joseph Regan".  Three are deceased, one is inactive (not practicing law for over 20 years), and the only one active is an insurance lawyer down in Santa Ana (6 hours south of San Carlos).  I reached out to him and he does not recognize the name "Jestwink".
  • My name is NOT James Rakvica.  Many folks from here have met me personally and know that is not my name.  I don't know where he got that name or address from, but it's not related to me in any way.

So again... he's resorting to making fake legal threats against the site.  Unfortunately for him, I actually have a lawyer who is prepared to defend me and this site in court.  If he would actually talk to a real lawyer as well, they would tell him he has no legal case either.  But if he wants to go through the legal discovery process though... MY lawyer will be happy to ask tons of detailed questions about him, his business operations, etc.  And I'll be happy to put ALL of the in the weeds details here as part of it.

From now on, any communication I receive from him is going to be posted here.  If he contacts any members of this site, please feel free to forward it to me and I'll anonymize it and post it here as well.

I cannot stress enough how much I recommend against either hiring or interacting with this person.  He has harassed other members of this site and me personally when anything is said about him.  If he's willing to do these sorts of things, he will have no sort of problem harassing you or trying to make your life miserable if he is ever unhappy.

If Jestwink thinks he has a legal case to be made, I encourage him to bring it.  Quit with the fake lawyer notifications and file the case.  The threats do not scare me.  My lawyer and I are fully prepared to defend myself and this site.

The letter has some elements of a professional cease-and-desist notice (e.g., formal structure, legal terms, specific demands), but several red flags suggest it was not drafted by a licensed attorney:

- The misapplication of the CCPA and vague legal references (“courts around the world”).

- The lack of attorney credentials, firm details, or contact information.

- Inconsistent tone, excessive repetition.

- Overreaching threats (e.g., “crimes against children”) that don’t align with the allegations.

It’s more likely that this letter was drafted by a non-lawyer, possibly “the client” himself or someone with access to legal templates, aiming to intimidate the recipient into compliance.

It’s sad to see someone flailing around digging the hole even deeper for themselves

Mr Regan’s address appears to be an apartment complex.

i ran the letter  through AI asking if it seemed legitimate and well written.  The response:

The letter appears superficially formatted like a legal cease-and-desist letter, but there are several signs that call into question its professional legitimacy and authorship by an attorney. Here’s a breakdown:

Strengths (Superficial Plausibility)

  • Uses legal terminology (e.g., “defamation,” “libelous,” “emotional harm”).
  • Lists specific URLs and alleged harms.
  • Uses phrases like “pursuant to,” “cease and desist,” and references legal standards.
  • Provides an official-looking return address and a government-affiliated email (though that’s also suspicious—see below).

🚩 Red Flags and Concerns

1. Email Address Is Highly Suspec

  • [email protected] is a California Safe at Home program address for victims of abuse to receive mail confidentially—not for issuing legal threats.
  • An actual law firm would use a custom domain (e.g., @reganlaw.com), not a state protection program’s email.

2. No Law Firm Listed

  • There is no law firm name, bar number, or contact phone number.
  • Professional legal correspondence always includes firm details and the name/bar ID of the representing attorney.

3. Tone and Language

Phrases like “calling him ‘batshit crazy’” and “referring to him as a ‘terrible person’” are emotionally charged and colloquial—not standard in professional legal writing.

  • It reads more like an internet forum defense than a lawyer’s formal cease-and-desist.

4. Mixes Legal Claims and Pop-Legal Terms

  • References to “copyright law” for use of a name are murky. Copyright applies to original works, not typically names or likenesses unless part of creative work.
  • Using the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to request deletion of forum posts is a misapplication of that law.

5. Questionable Claims

  • Refers to a burglary connected to online comments, yet no exhibit or police report is attached.
  • Claiming courts “around the world” have recognized individual rights to be free from “libel on web pages” is vague and irrelevant to U.S. jurisdiction.

Bottom Line

This letter does not appear to be professionally written or legally enforceable. It mimics the structure of a cease-and-desist, but key markers of legitimacy are missing. It is likely an intimidation attempt by a private individual pretending to be legally represented

LOL! This is getting interesting. I am a retired lawyer and JES is blowing smoke. Giving one's opinion is not actionable. Slander/Libel is. Stating "I do not recommend him" or "avoid him" does not remotely approach the elements needed to prove those torts.

At least he didn't say that the site had slandered him!

True.  But I do think that we should have a practice of sticking to the facts and how events made us feel rather than risk creating a case for libel that does involve the site.  Personally, I’d rather not have my posts (and identity) subject to discovery in due process

A couple of pics showing police cars and cops doesn't seem like a police report. And no police department would conclude that a burglary is connected with posts on this site. And I love the client name. I don't know of any attorney who would refer to their client by their Rentmen handle.

Just when you think you have seen it all!

Hi all. Having read all this, I have questions about RM safety.  Posted in  the Questions about Hiring forum because I thought it more appropriate, but still an off-shoot from this thread.

There have been highly respect members of the Forum say positive things about him, although I have experienced his off-putting requests to remove my posts

That's nice that JesTwink has some positive remarks here, but Glutes doesn't  fuck crazy.

Saw his ad some time ago and quickly concluded this provider was not for me. Liked the pics showing him in adventurous settings and activities but overall appeared a bit swishy and strongly suggestive of a drama queen; not my cup of tea.

So, when I noticed that this thread had gotten so much attention and participation I had to ask, What's all the buzz about this boy?

Havig now read it all, asked and answered. Jeez! What a hot mess!

For those just now seeing this thread for the first time and wondering about the pinned status, please take a few minutes to go over the entire thing and learn a few things. As always, level-headed moderator RadioRob clarifies a lot.
