I heard this on the news earlier today and was stunned, not by the allegations of a priest hiring a sex worker, but by his being caught and arrested… could this be bad news for all of us in NYC?

Father Michael Eguino was arrested Friday morning and charged with soliciting prostitution, police said. The...

Very odd.
Is it known whether he’s gay or closeted? I wonder if the chaplain came onto someone wildly inappropriate such as a young police officer.

My guess is that it was probably a female escort, not a male. There was no mention of him hiring a male escort in the article or news release.

I saw the headline and thought, 'donations'?

In a way, the answer is 'yes'.

Other articles have indicated that he hired an adult female sex worker.

Sounds like this was a set-up. Someone close to him or the woman made a phone call. I don't think anyone else has anything to be concerned about.

Don't worry about it... I wasn't at all concerned.

It's only bad news for those of us who hire prostitutes in our role as law enforcement personnel, and especially those who hire marginalized groups such as women or trafficked immigrants.  The headline is less about the crime of paid sex work or a member of the clergy, but more about the role of a paid public employee of the police department committing the act and possibly using his position as an influence over a vulnerable woman.

I listened to a podcast from someone who was familiar with law enforcement in New York City (it might have been Preet Bharara, but I can't remember for sure.) who said that the NY District Attorney's office for NYC had an entire office for sex crime and a group within that, that handled all the prostitution cases.  He said that they exercise a LOT of prosecutorial discretion and rarely prosecute for cases between consenting adults unless there's evidence of trafficking, it's embedded into another criminal activity (mob, drugs, sex-for-stolen goods, etc.), or it's impacting other people.

I don't think that priests make a lot of money and have a lot of disposable income.  I'm guessing there's a financial crime that may be attached to the investigation.  Maybe, "Where'd the church's embezzled money go?  Well, he spent it for sex."

He's a chaplain for the NYPD.  He's gets a police union salary and benefits.

The investigation would be for abuse of his power as being part of the police force.  The original poster forgot to include "NYPD Chaplain" in the subject, despite it being in the subject of the news article.

It did not seem like relevant information at the time I posted it, nor was it mentioned at all when I first heard it on the news.  My reaction was due to the fact that literally anyone at all is being arrested for something like this in NYC.

Ahh.  People get arrested for it all the time, but usually when one person complains to the cops
