‘Pee-wee Herman’ star Paul Reubens comes out as gay in posthumous documentary: ‘I was secretive about my sexuality’

PAGESIX.COM

“I was secretive about my sexuality even to my friends… [out of] self-hatred or self-preservation,” the late actor said in an interview with HBO.

This revelation gives new meaning to Pee Wee's classic line, "I know you are, but what am I."

Bozo loved watching Pee-wee's Playhouse on Saturday mornings. And "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" is one of Bozo's top ten movies of all time. When Pee-wee was dancing on that biker bar, Bozo was rolling on the ground...

giphy.gif
And "Big Top Pee Wee", though not the box office success as his previous film, partially inspired Bozo to become a circus clown.

How sad that Pee-wee felt the need to create an alter ego to obscure his sexuality - wasn't it obvious that Pee-wee was gay? Most people knew AND still loved him and the quirky, fun entertainment he provided!
What a talent and tragic loss...

Bozo figured that most people assumed that Pee-wee was gay. Correct? But nobody really cared.
What next? Posthumous confirmation that Richard Simmons, Paul Lynde, or Charles Nelson Reilly were homosexuals?

Q: Who are the only 2 men known to be shot in the back of the head in a theatre?

A: Abraham Lincoln and the guy sitting in front of Pee Wee Herman

I don’t believe Pee Wee, as a character, would have had the same life back then if Paul Reubens was openly gay. Especially when his show took off, his appeal was centered on children. A career in Hollywood as a gay person, particularly during that time, was incredibly difficult.

I really enjoyed watching Pee Wee's Playhouse...but that was mostly because I couldn't believe the amount of gay content they worked in to a kid's show !  It was incredible...and hysterically ironic.

I had no idea that Paul Reubens was "in the closet".  He was SO OBVIOUSLY gay that it never occurred to me that he COULD be "closeted". I am shocked that anyone didn't know.

There were many reasons to watch Pee-wee's Playhouse every Saturday morning. Tito, the shirtless lifeguard was the primary one for Bozo. Though he wasn't in the later episodes....
And watching Tito cradle Pee-wee's head in his massive arms (at 1:50 of the video below) had homoeroticism written all over it.

@pubic_assistance  Exactly!

The show had an endless array of gay characters and sexual innuendo that sailed over kids' heads and landed right in their parents' laps.
Pee-wee's Playhouse
was a queer fantasia of drag queen genies, campy broads, Jheri-curled cowboys, Mail Ladies, shirtless lifeguards, kitsch, kitsch, camp, camp, and more kitsch and more camp.
In today's cultural landscape, Pee-wee and his Playhouse would be too subversively gay, too likely to "indoctrinate the children." But in the more innocent Eighties, the show was a massive success. Just good family entertainment 🙂.

A big part of the issue was that he publicly exposed himself in that theatre...

An adult movie theater, where undercover police officers were also present. The incident would have gone completely unnoticed if it weren’t for Reubens’ fame as Pee-wee Herman, which led to intense media attention and public scrutiny. The publicity surrounding the arrest was more about his high-profile persona than the nature of the incident itself.

I didn't understand it then and I still don't understand it.  Why would police be in a theater showing porn in order to arrest men for pulling out their dicks?  Is that what most men did who went to movie theaters playing porn?  It's like a vegan going to a burger place and then being outraged that they serve beef.

It sure did LOOK like the sort of place you could get yourself off while watching an adult movie ..... strange that anyone would be raiding such a place, knowing full-well what normally goes on in these kinds of establishments.....

What are the incentives of the police? 1) It's an easy way to increase the number of arrests to make the officer and department look good. 2) Appease residents who believe that seedy establishments like that attract more crime, spread STDs, and harm property values and the quality of life.

I know, but what was it expected that people did in that theater when it was permitted. Did they even sell popcorn?

I'm looking forward to his film.

Paul Reubens had a network kids show, Pee-Wee's Playhouse.  Do you guys really think that 40 years ago CBS would allow a publicly out gay man to have a kids show?  Get real!!

The cops had it in for him.  The pornography charge was questionable.  His lawyer said it was without merit.  Sounds like the film sheds light on that.

Why not?
ABC had Charles Nelson Reilly starring in a Saturday morning Sid and Marty Krofft show = Lidsville
Just like Pee-wee's Playhouse - it was campy with oddball characters in strange costumes; talking hats (some good and some evil), androgynous genies, etc... and it was on the air 20 years before Pee-wee's Playhouse.

Maybe I just have terrible gaydar, but I didn't know he was gay. I'm not surprised, but I didn't just assume it like I did for, say, Jonathan van Ness.

I liked Pee Wee's Playhouse as a child whenever I happened to catch it, but I never knew when it was on or followed it super closely. I had no sense of gay content at that age, though. Certainly I had no recollection of Tito - wow!

Maybe you don't remember Tito (Roland Rodriguez) because he was only on the first season, replaced in subsequent seasons by Ricardo (Vic Trevino).  Ricardo was also very cute, but I think he always wore a soccer player uniform so we didn't get to see him shirtless.  Tito was always shirtless because he was the playhouse lifeguard (even though I don't think we ever saw anyone at the pool).

Other hunkalicious shout-outs: the men building the new wing of the playhouse using fruitcakes in the Christmas special and, of course, some of the UCLA men's glee club at the beginning of the Christmas special.

Charles Nelson Reilly was closeted. He came out in 2000, in his theatrical show “Save It for the Stage.” “Lidsville” ran from 1971-73.
