But then there are possibly tolls and traffic cameras that sweep up license plate numbers, which can be used to determine the route you took. Even walking is not completely discreet since cameras along your route can have facial recognition capabilities. The phone can still passively receive radio signals and often Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are still active in airplane mode now by default. It can still track your location as you move about and sync up once it can contact Google or Apple. It's unlikely the police or law will ever get involved, especially if you're in a liberal city. But if someone has it in for you, you can be traced and followed.
