I suspect every college campus in the world still has a GH at the last stall from the door on the third floor of the library.  College boys will always want their cock sucked anonymously between classes and that's just more efficient than anything else.  Straight(ish) boys probably don't want any kind of face-to-face grindr meet just to get their knob slobbered.  There's plenty of old-timey bathroom cruising out there in some places, as evidenced by tons of online video content shot with phones.  (OMG that that should have existed when I did such things ...)  But the whole culture of street cruising that flourished in moreorless the 70s-00s (bookstores, rest stops, alleyways, parks, etc etc) has passed.

Girls have gotten better at sucking dick over the last few decades. Glory holes were more common in days gone by when women didn't put out before marriage (or at minimum serious relationships). Many of the men who hung out at public restrooms and porn shops fifty years ago were married. In 1970, the average man married at age 22-23, so that makes sense. 

A book on glory holes/men's rooms, Tearoom Trade, came out at that time. The author took down license plate numbers at a local men's room, had a cop friend run the plates, and showed up at the unsuspecting cruisers' homes posing as a public health official taking a routine survey. As you say, some of the married  men he talked to were traditional masc guys who claimed their wives didn't like sex. Others said they were perfectly satisfied with their sex lives.
