IS THE TOWNHOUSE BAR (NYC)...?

Recommended Posts

Miss the days of hustler bars good to hear there is still one around.  I miss the strip club in Ft. Lauderdale, I think it was the Bus Stop.  Open on the afternoon on the weekends, full of barely legal twink strippers and 70+ old regulars.  Got picked up there a few times there on work trips.

Ten years ago it was definitely a hustler bar but nicer than most., some piano music, people dressed up a bit and lots of conversation and cocktails.  My spouse found his favorite ever escort there and fell in love with him.  Not sure what it is like today but hopefully some here will tell us.

Yes, it WAS "the" place in the pre internet and App days, working boys in the front room where you would shop 🙂 , the rear piano lounge for the older gents there just to window shop or wallow in  reminiscences  of their youth sipping their Manhattan's while listening to Cold Porter.  Or if they had $$$, show off the boy they brought that night.  *I started off in the front room, just cruising guys my age, and have now graduated to the back room lol.

It’s still alive and kicking, but mainly as a cocktail lounge and piano room.  It’s known as God’s Waiting Room. These days, I have yet to witness any hustler action. It’s all online now. Sad in a way. But here we are.

While we are on this subject, some years back there was an escort who hung out there, went by the name of James.  Brazilian, full head of wild curly hair a bit on the tall side.  Anyone remember him?  I know its a long shot ....

I’ve been offered $ more than a few times there before!

I had a gay client who used to want to stop in there for a drink sometimes. ( Probably like 20 years ago )

I was surrounded immediately like wolves over a recent kill.

Which I always found odd considering I was already WITH someone.

I guess they were just hoping to be *next in line". 😉

It’s an odd place. More a curiosity for me than a place to hang out and relax.

The location, at the nexus of the hedge fund / law firm district, high end retail, the start of the upper east side residential area and the bridge to queens is an odd mix, far from Chelsea or Hell’s Kitchen and the more traditional gay venues.

As a result, the crowd is a mix of all these elements and somehow it all works. The bar tenders, if you’re nice to them, will guide you to regulars in line with whatever scene you indicate you’re comfortable with, including those offering  … transactions of some sort. Not unusual to see elderly folks locked in sleepy embrace with those 30-40 years younger. It’s also a well known meeting place for clients/providers connecting elsewhere and online hookups prior to heading to someone’s residence or to the nearby east side club.

An apt description lol.  I'm in my 40's and last time I was there to hear a bud filling in on the piano I was a "twink " lol, two nattily dressed gents they had to be 85 if a day bought me drinks and had me sit with them etc, think they were just lonely and I kept thinking that'll be ALL of us someday.  They told me back in the day wealthy UESide gents would rent out a floor of their Townhouses for word of mouth "parties" like a bar for the night, guys could gather free of the fear of raids and the vice squad etc, and that's why the place was named that.

Thank you for articulating that. I’m four decades away from my 80s if I make it that far but do feel that our demographic forgets this reality. See it on this forum often as well and the subject is poignantly relevant when discussing things like why do some seek out providers, should providers have the right to reject (aka ask for a photo) etc

There’s a similar place about a mile south … uncle Charlie’s near grand central though I haven’t been in many years. I was introduced to it as a grungier version of  townhouse , where the providers, clients and regular hookup options (not to mention cocktails) were far less expensive.

younger at the older end and older at the younger (if that makes sense)  as I recall

This thread brings back memories. I was last there in 1998…so 25 years ago. I was there with an old friend and as I was just out of an LTR (14years), he was keen for me to “get back in the saddle”.

I was in my 40s and chatted to a young man in his 20s. He was an Israeli who had just completed his military service. Surprisingly he had a car so we drove to my place on the UES and luckily there was a space in my garage. The sex was decent but not brilliant (my fault, I feel): he asked me to come not in him but on his chest, which I did. We cuddled after and he decided to clean up in the bathroom while I lay in bed. To my surprise, he returned from the shower with a warm washcloth and proceeded to clean me up lovingly. It was the first, and only, time that someone has done that for me. He was a very sweet man.
