I think it's fair to ask and not offensive at all. Especially if they have pictures showing them shaggy or with short hair or if they're smooth in one and hairy in another. I always ask when the ad contains multiple pix, showing a variety of hair colors (natural brunette or black, straw blond, pink, green, etc).  I just note that and ask if they could take and send me a selfie today so I know what to expect.  I express no judgment about any particular color.
