I realize how much we need airlines in a modern world. However the last 10 times or so the airfares were outrageous...the service awful....late or cancelled...TSA rude....But I love to fly....I had to cancel my last trip to London and Paris. When they get the bailout or whatever it's called I would put in a clause "be nicer to Sammy"...

I would not be surprised to see some concession to COvid concerns. Perhaps temperature checks before boarding or if there is a rapid Covid test that can be done easily, having the test prior to boarding. The recycled air in a plane is a have for stray viruses. Some airlines will look to further improve their filtrations systems.

Still there are people traveling now with no extra precautions in place but to get to more people, the airlines will need to make people feel safe. I do not know what cruise lines can do to reassure people except lower the price so the more daring among us will travel on a cruise ship.

I was in China when one of the major flu outbreaks happened (forget which, SARS?). Airports and some office buildings has devices that looked like metal detectors that you walked through but they were really measuring a person’s temperature.

Before they closed, the Wynn & Encore casinos used thermal imaging to scan people entering the property. If anyone registered 100.4°+, security asked them to leave. I'm sure they will continue the policy once they re-open.

It was a smart move, even if they only got to really implement it for less than a week.

Asia's been doing it since November. They knew what was coming down the pike.

I suspect travel may be quite problematic until an effective vaccine is available. Then, I suspect that a certificate of vaccination will be required for any international travel, and especially for cruises. I certainly won't book a cruise until there's an effective vaccine out there. I guess the anti-vaxers can stay home (but I'm sure they'll be required to get your kid in school).

I hope airlines and hotel chains extend memberships and privileges of Platinum members till next year without considering how many nights/points they got in 2020.

The two Australian airlines have extended all status tiers by 12 months, and Hilton have as well. Hilton have also extended the expiry date of points balances.

I guess I need to find my yellow vaccination book.

We don't know whether COVID-19 is seasonal, but we'll get a better idea of that over the next few months from what happens in the southern winter. I suspect that even if the virus itself isn't affected by the season, the fact that we are at closer quarters in winter will cause something of an increase. There is also the issue of how the disease runs with a simultaneous seasonal infection, like the common cold or seasonal influenza.

My sample size is admittedly not scientific but almost all of my professional colleagues are cancelling planned summer travel. I note that those with kids acknowledge they may never use the credits they receive. If travel is safe by August and September there should be some crazy bargains.

Thanks, thought so. In fairness Pensant was talking about post-COVID travel when presumably at least some of the restrictions will be lifted.
I live in nyc unfortunately, and the thought of driving home to Toronto is not something i want to do... but if i have to i will. It‘s crazy here too.

United just join the number of airlines not only extending the status folks have now towards next year but also requiring less points/miles to achieve a higher membership.

Ok, so posting this here is a stretch, but children travelling or even seeing their grandparents are one of the groups who are waiting for it to end. The evening current affairs program put out a call last week, or maybe the week before, for people to send in videos of children sending messages to their grandparents. They are broadcasting a collection of these videos every few days. These are the ones broadcast tonight.

Marriott and United my companies of choice have also extended the status till February 2022. United also requires less Premier Qualifying Points (dollars spent on flights before taxes) to reach higher levels.

I guess airlines and hotels are assuming borders will be closed for a long time and they seem to have a better insight then most governments.

I was so glad to see United do this. I thought my premier status was gone...

I have concert tickets in Toronto for (American) Labor Day weekend. At this point, I'd say it's probably a 50/50 that I will be able to go. My cousin and his toddler daughter live there so was really looking forward to time with family, but it may be that I'll have to hold off.

But who knows, it could taper off by then. I think with proper testing and screening, we could get back to normal-ish. But I also don't feel confident that we will do what we need to do.

Canadian and American Labor Day are always the same weekend.

I don't see the border opening up to the U.S. until the end of the year the earliest. This summer is already thrown away as far as activities and travelling goes. Our Prime Minister did say on Thursday that the process of getting things back to "normal" won't start until the next couple of months, and that begins with getting some people back to work with restrictions in place.

You‘re right. I think they cancelled Toronto’s Gay Pride (June) and Caribbanna (July) already.
