2019 DC Forum Members Gathering during MAL

Please mark your calendars for the next Forum DC Gathering, January 20, 2019.

 

As with past DC gatherings, the event will span the MLK weekend, and coincide with Mid Atlantic Leather (MAL). Here is the link to the MAL reservations page: https://www.leatherweekend.com/

 

The dates for MAL are January 18 - 20, 2019. The DC Forum group brunch will be held on Sunday, January 20. The venue is secured and details regarding timing and location will be sent via email on January 11.

 

There will be a range of get-togethers, culminating in the traditional brunch on Sunday. This event is open to Forum Members including clients and providers.

 

I would have posted this much earlier but due to a personal matter related to a very sick close friend, I’ve been preoccupied and distracted of late. This event WILL happen, and you can start making arrangements with confidence.

 

For those of you who may not be interested in MAL or the leather scene, not to worry! Traditionally the DC gathering has coincided with MAL because it's a long weekend and many of us are in town, but the forum gathering is otherwise independent of the leather activities and is welcoming to all forum members. You may choose to sample some of the MAL activities, or go "whole-hog", or alternatively forgo them completely. That's up to you.

 

If you're interested in attending, please send a direct message to me @ArVaGuy. As the date approaches, we'll get in touch with each member who has expressed interest.

 

And if you have general questions or suggestions for the gathering, please do so in this thread.

I’m excited to be continuing this fun tradition and hope you'll join.

For some reason I got my dates confused but I will still be there. Are there events on Friday night, because that will influence my travel.

 

@purplekow there will be the usual late Friday afternoon meet up at the host hotel near the main lobby bar. We’ll also have a field trip to Secrets on Saturday night for sure as well.

I will have to wear a hat to avoid @Ace playing with my hairless head.

@ArVaGuy , if you allow me a suggestion, I would put Secrets on hold. Being MAL weekend, it is possible we will have a Meatloaf event on Saturday, with hosting porn stars. You can read my reports here and here. Way better than Secrets. The con is that they do not advertise the events with more than 2 or 3 weeks of anticipation.

It’s something to consider and I’ll wait and see if they offer some type of event. Secrets may not be around much longer considering the gentrification of the neighborhood caused by the DC United stadium. The last time I spoke to the owner some months ago he wasn’t sure what impact there would be on his business. Rents will skyrocket and developers are making big plans for the area. Plus having been in business for decades I’d speculate retirement is looking pretty good right now.

 

It’s doubtful the DC City Council will help out relocating the venue like they did when the baseball stadium displaced the business last time. Jim Graham spearheaded that effort and he’s seriously dead and there’s no gay members on the council now.

 

The reason Secrets is strict about touching and fraternization is due to the ABC enforcement issues. When Secrets reopened in their current location the Alcohol Beverage Control officials sent undercover agents to monitor behavior. They found several violations related to touching and the like. The ABC board suspended their liquor license and timed that to happen over Gay Pride weekend. Thus Secrets lost out on major business. I’m not sure they were able to appeal in time or not to but it was a big issue for the owner at the time.

 

Who can blame him for protecting his investment and is strict about touching and fraternization. I’d do the same if it were my business.

Hey, I go where the fun is. For whatever reason, Secrets is not fun. Maybe he should do the same that Rockhard used to do, or Meatloaf does now, I guess they bribe the right city officials.
