My high school gym classes didn't give you enough time to shower. As for sports I only did track and in four years I think I saw three boys use the shower and only once or twice each. Not sure what the other teams did but I never saw the showers being used by the other teams.

In my high school gym showers were mandatory. If a boy didn't he was called on it by the teacher.

Regarding cameras at the nude beach, I think it's incredibly tacky but it definitely happens. A friend recently posted a pic of himself on his towel to social media saying suns out buns out and I called him out for including a bunch of people in the background.

Things really have changed. Few people would have cared years ago. Some guys wanted photos of their their cute asses

Some men are just more modest. I used to have a gym buddy who would wrap a towel around his waste before taking off his shorts. I think I say his penis once in about 20 trips to the gym. Me: I just walk around nude. No problem.

It's their bodies. They should control who sees it

It seems like a lot of this discussion is about "why won't these young guys take their clothes off so I can look at them?" Not about them, more about using them

AS the OP, I think you are way off base with the "so I can look at them" - It is something I observed and I have heard many friends mention this same behavior at the Gym. The question is and WAS WHY???

I made no comment about your original post. My comment was about the comments I read through the thread. Why are you being so defensive? No need.

I was bullied in school; I got ulcers. The jocks had their own dressing room but it adjoined the regular dressing room and one could look into it. I was wary when I was in the locker room. I'd keep looking around to see where one particular jock was. This was my Sophomore year. Thankfully his buddy had graduated the previous year. So I looked around my locker and saw him naked in the jock's room. Our eyes met; he made great sport of it. I was was not checking him out; I just wanted to see where he was.

Perhaps now, but I don't think that was the original intention of the thread.

I believe several posts stuck to the odd, puritanical-bordering-on-prudish behavior of younger generations (and why).

My take: As long as people keep hands to themselves, why shouldn't a guy enjoy others appreciating his body?

It was just one of the things that men did-they weren't self-conscious about being nude around other men. In locker rooms, men walked around in the buff in front of each other without a thought. Guys who were self conscious were sissies.

I think it's just a prudish age. Men's locker rooms in health clubs always have individual showers now. It's another legacy of therapeutic parenting wherein parents try to spare their kids as much stress and discomfort as they can.

Years ago the pictures might be seen by dozens at most, not thousands at minimum when they're posted to social media.

Sometimes the hesitancy to "show the goods" depends on the competition. When I was in college I worked in a chemical factory where everyone was required to shower together at the end of the shift - usually about 30 guys at one time. I'm telling you, some of those guys would make anybody feel inadequate. Being a wimpy little college guy I felt like the appetizer at a bratwurst festival.

In this situation just lots of regular flaccid cocks - normal variations - nothing humongous --

One of the things I love about this site is that some of the silly topics that come up elicit such wonderful memories. When I first started teaching, in September of 1966, I lived with my sister, my brother-in-law and their two small boys for a month so I could save money and use my first pay check to rent a place of my own. My sister was a stay at home mom. One afternoon her neighbor came charging over absolutely furious. She had just visited her gynecologist who had suggested that it was sometimes difficult for a woman to find lumps in her own breasts and thus it was a good idea to have her husband check them periodically. She indignantly informed her doctor that her husband had never seen her naked nor would he. They had two children. They were from a small town in Oklahoma and were very fundamental Christians. Needless to say my sister was flabbergasted. After dinner my sister, my brother-in-law and I sat around drinking wine coming up with ideas about just how she had become pregnant. The more we drank the more outrageous our ideas became. Finally, laughing hysterically, we decided that they had to have an opaque plastic sheet with a strategically placed hole hidden away in a closet. We laughed about that wonderful evening for years and even though my brother-in-law is now gone my sister and I still laugh remembering the incident

When I was a little kid my father took me with him to go see the foundry at the International Harvester plant in our town. We were there at change of shift and all the guys who were just quitting were showering together in a big open shower room. I was astonished to see all those naked men laughing and yelling and kibitzing.

Maybe it's not about being nude in front of others, but the fear of getting an erection in front of them. I certainly felt that way when I was young and would get an erection from just a fleeting glance or almost any kind of stimulus. I went to a small high school in the 60's and we all showered together in a communal shower room after gym class. One day a b0y happened to get an erection in the shower and he was hounded mercilessly for it. I outgrew that fear when in my 20's a local beach flipped to nude (not gay) and I spent 2 glorious summers there!

Now that sounds like a porn fantasy!!

The Porn Fantasy was in Basic Training when the Sgt said everyone had Xminutes to shower and get dressed for bedside inspection and there were 50, naked, in shape men jammed in the group shower and I (gay) was scared to death I would get an erection as flesh touched flesh in the milling around. This was 1970 and they gave dishonorable discharges to anyone suspected of being Gay.

I think being with other naked men (in a non sexual way) is a validating ritual. I rode to CA AIDS Lifecycle ride in June, the ride ended in LA and I stayed a few days after (which included gay pride in LA). I went to a Russian bath - non sexual, but a place which celebrated men being together. There was steam, sauna, swimming, massage, showers etc. The old time Russian guys did Platza a ritual of drumming someone with oak branches w/leaves which have been soaked in water. It’s an ancient, beautiful non sexual ritual of healing. I was happy to watch the ritual while also enjoying a steam sauna whirlpool and massage.

It was hard for me to figure out the change too until someone explained to me that men just recently have been seen as sex objects. Back then a "sex object" was almost by definition a female; men were providers and defenders. Homosexuality was thought to be extremely rare. There was just no concept until the gay rights movement and feminism that men could conceivably be thought of sexually. Those men certainly had no clue there was sex appeal in men.

Today as a part of equal rights men are often promoted as sex objects by women's rights types and gays. It's pretty widespread and publicized. Here in DC our gay nude strip club has become a mecca for attractive young liberated women to come and treat the dancers as sex objects . There's also a realization by everyone of how many men are sexually attracted to the male body.
