I would be content if I could only ever go again, hypothetically, to one of these 2 cities and it happened to be, arbitrarily, São Paulo. Otherwise, I hold no criteria for one over the other. This dovetails with the millions of inhabitants occupying both. My contacts in either metropolis would opine that any comparator analysis is largely subjective. That said, a negative experience obviously anchors perspective and a quantitative total of 1 such event largely dictates the qualitative.

Yeah I’ve stayed in 5 very distinct zones in São Paulo. None seem “touristy”, including my latest lodgings at Renaissance steps from Paulista. Even their gym is populated by locals’ prerogative for membership. My point would be that Rio might be seen as a relatively essentialist destination for a visit to Brazil, but curated tours or the (overrated) signature draw of typical tourist areas obscures the reality that there are nice viable departures from that playbook. What I took from your earlier post is that you seemed to imply your return to Rio would be unlikely. I wasn’t sure if you were dissuading others. I think that actually you know the options. However much such options are shared there may be little effect on new visitors’ decisions. I should add that as a novice visitor without extraordinary travel skills I stayed in the sub-south area and never lodged south of Flamengo over several years; that may be comparatively unique.

You make it seem that as a visitor to Rio de Janeiro you have no choice of area for accommodations, as if the only option is a circumscribed regional zone where opportunistic crime is more likely to prevail due to the neighbourhood mapping you describe. I visit Rio weeks at a time and stay in an area that has a few decent hotels, private home platform alternatives, and great neighbourhood amenities including Metro stations and a rambling oceanside boardwalk loaded with fitness folks of all ages shapes sizes. You would rarely see another tourist, most hotel guests are Brazilian, and the main street sidewalks are teeming with locals, many of them retirees, going about their day. It’s easy to fit in visually. The only thing that would signify being a visitor would be your interaction with lodgings hosts, harmless waiters, and market cashiers. I don’t even go down to Copacabana and Ipanema any more, having already seen what I find worthwhile and now lacks the novelty that impels a first time visitor to take in that area.

I agree, even though I can log into the app PlanetRomeo and access Hunqz there, or enter Hunqz in Google search field, both require logging steps and, even then, one sometimes has to scroll the listings to find the provider ID word embedded in the link. It’s far easier to just do a quick city search, say, weekly, rather than rely on arbitrary links selected by another board member. Like @Luv2play, I’ll more likely open a RM link. That’s a hard call. LOL. I prefer 1:1, so that with Dom (JS) was good on a later day. He seemed to take direction from Pav (SS) but had no problem taking control on his own. They were busy with another customer in the spa features and then went private with him. All I knew is that I had better strike when they were snacking afterwards or I would be extremely disappointed. I think it was “sloppy seconds” on their part when they may have planned to leave, so the timing wasn’t ideal, but the experience was hot because they are both so gorgeous. But with Dom the later date I don’t think he was tuckered out by previous sessions. The unfortunate thing was I had to leave Zürich too soon after meeting them.

Contrary to the usual, I don’t have plans to travel to Europe this year. Last Spring Paragonya was disappointing. I have also covered all sightseeing goals in northern Switzerland. I get pulled aside for luggage check about 1 in every 10 times returning to Canada from South America. There seems to be a bit of curiosity about why a retired snowbird’s passport is stamped primarily according to mainly Brazil trips rather than the usual go-to for Québecois: Cancun, Varadero, or Punta Cana (ick!). I assume the pieces of that puzzle come together when they rifle through my Air Canada kit exclusively containing douche bulb, KY, sani-wipes, dozens of yet unopened condoms, and a small tiny battery-operated auto-timer (seriously). So far, I have received no comment. Although maybe I should separate the timer and put it with a muffin recipe. The last officer recently was a pleasant sociable young woman. I apologized that I realized that I had brought in an apple and nuts from South America. She said it wasn’t a problem and did not confiscate them.
