God's Own Country

I saw this film last week and it stayed with me for several days. I was riveted by the raw, intense performances of the two male leads, and how their relationship slowly developed. The hardscrabble Yorkshire setting has echoes of 'Brokeback', but it's a much grittier film. The scene, half-way through the film, when the emotionally aloof Johnny shares a passionate kiss with Gheorge (the sensitive, beautiful Romanian immigrant) is a satisfying moment--it makes you almost fall in love with the characters. But the film is not big on sentiment--though it has its moments: when Johnny's disabled father gives his approval their relationship, and a brief scene where the two men impulsively climb a hilltop and view stunning sunset. It's probably one of the best films I saw this past year.

My favourite film of the year. The setting reminded me a lot of parts of my childhood, and the sex scenes were pretty realistic, though more lube would have been appropriate. :D

For a low budget film, I found the cinematography quite impressive. The beautifully well-lit afterglow scene (with full frontal) where the two leads just talk as intimate friends or lovers do after sex, is very memorable.

I almost missed this film, which is playing for a second week in Philadelphia. Will see it tomorrow. Not many gay-themed films receive 99% approval from Rotten Tomatoes.

I found it a very interesting film. It was made on a small budget but has strong performances; the sex scenes are realistic. Tho it had very good reviews in the UK media, I suspect that it didn't do so well at the box office as it wasn't marketed at all.

Lol, good to have the discerning eye of a professional cast over this aspect of the scene!

I've only watched it the one time when it was first released. I'll watch it again before Sunday's live Q&A.

While everyone was swooning over Call Me By Your Name (rightly so), I was falling in love with this movie. Beautifully shot and the actors had great presences.  I particularly like that it's a love story. It did not follow the "I'm realizing that I'm gay" trope with many LGBT blockbusters.

Love this movie.  Gorgeous.  Additionally, what everybody forgets to think about, is that their life together is likely going to be horrible.  Both of them, particularly the Brit., are raging alcoholics.  Love doesn't make that go away

I read that this was the first English-speaking role for the actor that played Gheorghe, which is amazing, since he was by far the easiest to understand of all the actors in the film.   He worked on a farm for 2 weeks before the filming, which makes his realistic scenes with the animals that much more impressive.

One question...  how did he manage to keep his facial stubble so perfectly sexy out there in the fields?

When you see the movie @samhexum you’ll realise that there are few entertainments in deepest rural England. So stubble-perfection becomes a cultural pursuit.

This comment made me chuckle @Rod Hagen The local pub is often the sole place to meet others in these rural places. And I felt the British guy drank to allay his conflicted desires/needs.

An observation that has been made in the UK (about US drinking) is that if you order a glass of wine with dinner, you’re sophisticated; if you order a second glass, you have a drink problem; but if you order a bottle of wine to drink over dinner with a friend, you’re a lush. (Full disclosure: the two of us always have a bottle of wine with dinner)

That may, in part, be why he started drinking, but that doesn't mean he'll now be able, or willing, to stop.  Oh well, best to these two hot, made-up, men :-)

I watched the movie again and there's no indication Gheorghe is an alcoholic.  When he has his first meal at the farm he's offered a drink (or to go to the pub) but said no thanks.  When he & Johnny do go to the pub, Johnny gets buzzed, but Gheorghe nurses his drink and doesn't even finish half of it.

I know this pic was used in all the advertising, but I don't recall a corresponding scene in the movie:

I grew up in rural Massachusetts close to a farm with cows, pigs, chickens and many cats.

But the owners were more or less "gentlemen farmers" with another business. Go getters from what was then Eastern Europe.

Cows are guite friendly but cats are smarter.

Occasionally the cows would get out. Jeez.

The big plus were the small brooks and streams in the cow pastures. And of course winter in Massachusetts was quite different than the Summer. The cows returned to the farm in the Fall.

Sadly a bull killed the owners brother, walking into  the bull's  territory could be deadly.

apologies, been a long time since I saw the movie.  Then just the one character is addicted to alcohol.  Great photo, maybe it was a scene that got cut, or maybe they posed for the posters, like they do in porn :-)

Promise? 😉

It was in the script.  🤔

I wanted to see more of Gheorghe;  I had 2 choices...  Ammonite, a film about a lesbian romance, written & directed by Francis Lee, who also did God's Own Country, and which also had Gemma Jones (Nan in GOC) in the cast, or Amulet, a horror film.  I figured Amulet would be less scary than a film about lesbians.

It was nothing special (though I'm not a horror buff), but...  the first shot of the movie is a close up of his clean-shaven face while he's sleeping, then we quickly see him shaving, then dancing (with headphones on).  He also has shorter hair than in GOC.

Just as I was saying to myself that he looks better with facial hair, he wakes up from a dream with facial hair that appeared fuller & thicker than in GOC, which proves he WAS contouring out in the fields.

So with a mere 2 minute investment, you can see him with different looks...  it's available for free on HULU, as is GOC, and in each case all you get is a 90 second commercial break before the film starts, then no commercials during the film.

The Guardian described O'Connor as a different type of actor who is unguarded, a huncher, a ready smiler with dyslexia who finds reading difficult but still enjoys it

"By the end of the film I was so skinny. I was in character the whole way through. It was really lonely and hard. I don’t think I’d do it again. You isolate yourself from all your friends. By week four we had to stop filming because I was so sick...probably because I didn’t wash my hands."
