Darhings dahlings, I taking the Private Jet from the ranch up to Madras OR. Superior viewing to be had, complete with Dixieland music!

Tell us your plans.

Enjoy!! Apparently Madras is quite the place for aviation aficionados. Weather permitting, I might slip out of Hillsboro Inlet for a look see.

I just returned from Oregon, where the eclipse is the dominant topic. Legal camping spots along the traverse of the eclipse were filled up by last November, but authorities are closing some of the most popular booked spots in the national forests because of serious wildfires (we had to change our own travel plans because of them), and rooms in towns along the routes are ridiculously expensive for an event that will last only a few minutes.

Camping with friends in the mountains near Bend, OR. Dodging wildfire smoke and a few thousand other people.

Look for my Gulfstream at BDN, I will buy you a beer!

Staying home, I leave on a camping vacation the next day and will be packing. Detroit will see most of it but we're not on the path of totality. My roommate is heading down to Illinois or Indiana to see totality. Need to make sure he's not planning on taking any of my camping equipment. :-)

We are at over 99% totality here on the south edge of Portland Metro- will be on the rooftop parking of my business, observing for the middle half-hour, then back to the grindstone afterward. A short fifty foot walk upstairs, compared to the expected bedlam on the hiways- the 5PM news here led with gas shortages already in Bend, LaPine and Madras!

Being outside in a total eclipse is a surreal experience. If you can be in a park or similar area away from traffic noise that will add to the effect, as nature goes quiet. I've only experienced one, and it was overcast but it was still affecting. Don't stay indoors or worse watch it on television or the net.

As customers prepare for next week’s total solar eclipse, Amazon has issued a recall for some of the eclipse glasses sold on its internet marketplace, saying it was unable to confirm whether the protective ware was made by a recommended manufacturer.

NASA and the American Astronomical Society have been urging solar gazers to use glasses engineered by reputable vendors that carry the international safety standard number “ISO 12312-2.”

I wonder if the traffic looks this bad from thirty thousand feet?
