Does accurate information mean require depicting a female pelvis that looks like a freak pomegranate or a full frontal view of a smiling baby being born?

Consider the audience. It is a picture book intended for younger children. We don't expect total realism from comic strips like Bloom County or Peanuts.

Also I was talking in general, not about this specific book.

Considering the likelihood that middle-school aged kids will stumble across porn of some kind on the internet, familiarizing them with male and female anatomy in all its variety might help combat the normalization of porn as the standard for sex that Juan Vancouver talked about in another thread today. Sex ed in high school needs to prepare kids to have emotionally and physically healthy sex lives and to take control and agency over their bodies rather than push an ineffective abstinence agenda that does nothing to prepare them for being sexually active adults.

I believe that is the most important word in the OP's kick-off post. Most disconcerting might have been a Gross of Condoms down to it's last survivor... How to divide 11 into 2?

True. If it were opened and a couple gone, they might have just tried them out. If it were nearly empty, I'd imagine it meant something else.

When you had 'the talk' or at other times since then did the subject of not pressuring their girlfriends if they say 'no' come up? Also did you tell them it was ok to wait, that just because their friends might be 'having relations' right and left didn't mean they had to follow suit?

Oh, yes indeed! They've heard variations on those themes since the oldest started going out with girls. I think they'll do things at the right time and in the right manner. (Fingers crossed)

There's also the question a friend whose son just started college asked shortly after the sentencing (or non-sentencing) of Brock Turner, the Stanford swimmer convicted of rape and caught in the act by some Good Samaritans: What would you do if you discovered a drunk, disoriented female student passed out behind a dumpster?

He looked at her, puzzled, like why is this even a question, and said "Help her?" After thinking about it some more, he asked "Should I call an ambulance?", which prompted a lengthier discussion, at the end of which she concluded he was indeed ready for college.

Yikes! I have to wonder what an adult big city dweller would do?

This was on a college campus. If it happened outside a campus, where one would have no way of knowing or finding out who the person involved was, it seems to me calling an ambulance/paramedics is your best choice.

I would rather call medical professionals to transport her to a hospital than the police because police exploitation of situations like this is not unknown. They could decide to take it on themselves to search for ID and take her home themselves. An ambulance squad or paramedics would not do that.

Probably not, but I might have looked to see if it were mostly full or almost empty.

I don't have kids so I don't know for sure, but I suspect I would do the same. BTW, I don't think there is a good or bad answer to the question!

Basketballer you mentioned that the quiet one came to you and told you that he had not had sex. That the more outgoing one did not leads me to think that he may be a bit ahead of his brother.

Just to follow up, I was wondering about this as well. But this morning the boys got up and left early to work out at school, as they sometimes do. They left me a note to tell me they'd be home after class, and signed it "Your Virgin Sons."

Well, that seems to settle that. Unless they were implying their older brother ISN'T a virgin... no, not going there.

It sounds as though you could have a TV reality show of your own. Funny kids.

Lol! A parent's job never ends? Hopefully no one will be passing the turnips at dinner any time soon! ;)

Because there is a law that no topic in Daddy's Forum can be completely without a mention of hunky men often with a lament that we wish they were gay (or our super secret power of discerning they are actually gay whether the rest of the world knows it or not), here is a more current picture of Randall Batinkoff who is 47/48 years old now.

It's cute! ;)

Yes, not something a teenage boy (or anybody), wants to hear in the shower. When they were about 4 my twins got tired of hearing they were so cute, and one of them responded hotly, "We're not cute, we're boys! We're handsome!"

I guess hearing "It's handsome" in the shower would be okay.

For Keeps was one of the first semi-adult movies I ever got to see as a kid. It was PG13,and I was like 11. I felt so cool.

You're so young!!:(

I'm at the point where 'cute' or 'adorable' is again sounding better and better to me.

It think it is all relative, Gman. I believe @BasketBaller and I are about the same age. I turned 38 earlier this year and I'm beginning to say 20-something guys are young, which I know they are but just a couple of years ago, I would not have said so (or freely admitted it). When I hear BBaller talk about his sons, I do feel old. Wouldn't change for the world tho. My 30s have been awesome although somewhat randomly played. I'm gonna grab my forties by the balls and squeeze every drop of goodness outta them. I also plan to ignore negative self-talk about age.

Wow...seventeen and still virgins ? When MY oldest was 15, and started dating, I BOUGHT him a box of condoms and discussed how and why they needed to be used.

Didn't take long before he asked me to buy another box ! I, myself, started messing around with girls at 10 and by 14 was having full-on intercourse. I am shocked in today's world that

some boys are still virgins at 17...but then we live in NYC...so peer pressure to grow up in many ways is significant here.

Seems to me like there was also some unconscious parent pressure? I'm not doubting the wisdom of your parenting choices,PA, but just pausing to wonder if your own experience influenced the choice you made on how to present sexual activity & protection to your child. Since I don't have enough facts, I wouldn't know. Just asking.

Personally, I love the fact that the twins have apparently made a conscious and informed choice of their own, despite living in or near what seems to be a large city like DC.

It's not unreasonable to consider that possibility ....but I can only say for sure, we tried to made human sexuality "normal" for him, and removed the societal guilt from our own opinions of when and with who. Certainly my own experiences don't mirror his at all.....and I wasn't very specific about discussing my own sexual paths, as I know each person needs to find his own way around. We also have to consider the young woman, with whom he shared his first encounters...Her own parents were driving that decision making process, not me. Rule #1 was that sex with a woman NEEDS to be requested by her, not demanded by you. She definitely was in charge of the moment.
