I book seats in the rear of the plane. It makes it more certain that I'll get overhead storage. I don't care if I'm the last one off the plane.

Do you care if you are in the seat just before or across from the bathroom? I've been in those a time or two. And it wasn't a great experience as breezes from inside the room wafted over me.

United has actually dropped a lot of their first class fares. I go to Vegas a few times a year and I found that often once you add the charge for "premium economy" the extra $$ to get a first class seat is not that much. Especially when you factor in getting extra miles etc if you travel more frequently or are on the cusp of the next status level.

So I mostly choose my dates carefully and fly first now.

That said even first class isn't what it used to be.

Besides your checked bag (if you check one) will be waiting for you as soon as you walk into the baggage claim area.

I guess you were in the aisle next to it, and I'm sure whoever was in the window didn't even notice that. I had that experience once and my seat had no way to recline because I was at very back of the plane, the restroom was right behind me but I was next to the window and I didn't smell anything...

Some airlines are coming with a solution for all this subject.

There's also some extra storage room for a laptop or purse/murse under the seat.

The Russians did try to solve a similar issue of lack of restroom space for the Sochi Olympics.

Being near the rear of the plane also tends to give you the best views if you have a window seat, and less distance to travel to the lavatory. It's the least problem if you're on the plane towards your final destination, when there will be no worries about connection times. If you're thinking of buying food, however, you're going to have the least amount of choice by the time the cart gets there. If I have a connection, though, I can get nervous, although I usually try to allow at least 90 minutes between flights. I usually pick an exit row or the front in the Economy Plus in case I don't get upgraded... Plus I get to go to the airline lounge more quickly!

Whether it's on a plane, public or office restroom why is it some people don't know it's possible to flush before they're finished as well as at the end? Nothing smells worse than what comes out of some people.

Back a few years ago, one airline (United I think) tried boarding window seats first in group one, middle seats in group two and isle seats in group three. I think it did not work out as it broke up families traveling together.

I wasn't aware anyone had actually tried it, but experiments proved that boarding window seats, then middle seats, then aisle seats was 50% faster than any other boarding method. Nobody does it for exactly the problem of families flying together.

That's interesting - I'd have thought that boarding from the last row forward would be the most efficient. I recall Delta tried that for a time several years ago but stopped - I assume so they could give those with a loyalty status a perk that didn't cost them anything.

Aside from their uncomfortable seats, I hate Southwest's no assigned seating. I don't mind them on a quick flight say from Dallas to Houston or Austin. But they are horrible on long hauls such as Baltimore to Seattle.

I hated Southwest and avoided them for years until they started offering nonstop flights from San Diego to Chicago. Given the other carriers have fewer nonstops (if any) on that route, I usually fly Southwest. I always pay the $15 for early bird check-in (get assigned to the "A" boarding group) and upgrade to Business Select at the airport (typically get position A5 or 6) which usually gets me my favorite seat on a 737 - the one behind the wing exit door. You see, the row next to the wing exit has two seats, not three, so my long legs can stretch as far as they please. For me, their seats are no more or less comfortable than the other carriers'.

I find Southwest's seats to be just a bit narrower than the usual planes of the Legacy carriers (not their puddle jumpers). And while never meaning to denigrate any of your body parts, @rvwnsd, would you be shocked to know that I can feel a pea under my mattress? ;)

Folks wanted lower prices, they got em and now they can't handle the reverb

you want first class treatment? buy a first class ticket :)

you think an airline can pay for jet fuel on an $80 ticket alone? No sir.

Right on and blunt as usual!

We all have choices:

1) jerking off

2) hookup

3) hire a guy who's worth $ 75.

4) hire an escort who's worth $ 300.

In most cases like in the airline business you get what you paid for!

Southwest has the same seat regardless of what you pay for. There is no business class / first class. The seat width will be the same regardless of what you pick. Exit row seats may even be narrower in the exit row or bulkhead because the tray table will be integrated into the armrest.

The Great Equalizer, in more ways than one.

if traveling Southwest, I definitely go for the $15 early-bird deal (very worth it).....and when boarding, unless I have a tight schedule, I make a beeline for the back of the plane and often end up with nobody next to me....good outside views and I get to witness the circus of people up the aisle hauling all they own on board, trying to load it overhead, and watching the annoyed looks on the people stuck behind.....worth the $15 for that alone!

Actually, Southwest has the widest seats among carries that use 737 planes:

Business Select means you receive an A1 - 15 boarding position. As @Kurtis Wolfe pointed out, there is one class on Southwest planes.

I meant upgrade to a business class on any airline that has it.

it wasn't clear on your post, I only fly United. I meant an upgrade on any airline that has First Class or Economy Plus.

I get extra leg room on united 24 hours before departing, and I buy the upgrade to first class to go across the country at the airport, usually is cheaper that way.

When you said exit row have 2 seats instead of 3, did you mean Southwest on that case or another airline?

The article talks about SW increasing the width of their seats by mid 2016. And the graph doesn't make clear whether it's talking about SW's current seats or the new wider ones. My experience about SW was not in the past 6 months. Last time I was on one about a year ago, I'd still say they lose on padding although American's padding was nothing to write home about either.

Are Amtrak's seats comfortable enough for you?

That wasn't necessary...

I love taking Amtrak to and from NYC, I'd never change it!

I've even commuted that way from Seattle to LA once, stopping by SF.

As it was said on here before:

Is up to us to make our own choices when it comes to getting a plane ticket on United, Delta, etc, and what kind of seat/service do we want?

Flying is tough? Some folks can't afford flying and take greyhound across America, that's tough.

Why do people have a phobia to check their bags?

I've noticed on recent flights both domestic and international that the bags are ready to be collected by the time you reach the baggage carousel.

So you lug everything all the way to the gate and back and have a drama on board!!!

I have checked everything except my messenger even on long haul international flights

If you've ever had an airline lose your luggage, you would understand. It need only happen once, and you would be cured from ever checking baggage again. The airline has lost my luggage, and never found it, and once on a cruise out of Naples, Lufthansa lost my luggage, and it took them 3 days to get it to me. They didn't want to send it forward to the ship, but wanted to send it back to LA, and surprisingly the cruise line was very uncooperative also. It was ridiculous. It took threats of a litigation before the Celebrity and Lufthansa finally agreed to work together and have my luggage meet the ship. That last little fiasco pretty much cured me of ever letting my luggage out of my control when traveling.

I've got this whole 'Carry-On" thing down to a science...
