Myself, I'm not having a crisis. I'm having a party. Wanna come?

Because the inner cities were empty, dangerous and had a huge crime rate... but you had vision and you bought a town house and fixed to live in a place where you'd be accepted. Now you're rich!

May I suggest you add the tag D.I.L.F. I'm sure it doesn't apply to all but at least to some "middle age" gay men.

I must be hanging with the wrong crowd. Nobody I know is having a mid-life crisis. They're just hanging out enjoying life.

San Francisco is a whole different world, and now young folks can't afford living in that area.

As much as I whine about being so many years in the closet, I know that had I been out for those years, I would probably be dead now from AIDS. It's sobering and reminds me to gratefully live each day.

I understand your point but to be honest with you I think "closeted" guys are more likely to be promiscuous and careless to a self destructive kind of behavior. I'm not saying DL guys have more sex than openly gay men but they act by impulse and seem to be unaware (in the 80's and now) of the consequences of their behavior.

For me...#19

19. Because if you could write a letter to one of those friends who died of AIDS-related complications, and said you were going through a midlife crisis, how do you think he’d respond? Love every minute of this, for him, for them, for us

And because I started partying when I was 40, and I haven't stopped yet. They're going to bury me in my red dress, white pearls and six inch pumps.

Oh my. Dear, sweet BVB.

All I can say in response to your post is one is reminded of the benefits of maturity and temperance and an adult attempt to restrain the more puerile proclivities of Gay male sexual mores.

I was a complete childish asshole until I was 40. I was a married and monogamous community organizer who never made more than about $30,000 a year, who did shitty and stupid and absolutely useless things like stopping Enron in their quest to deregulate energy in Oregon, helping develop billions of dollar in mortgage lending programs that helped low-income people buy and keep homes, and building national and state and local coalitions, and other totally dumb shit like that. I drove up a beat up old Chevy.

Finally, when I turned 40, I grew up and focused on really important things. I became a whore. I bought a red Miata, which I replaced with a Mercedes Benz. I bought a lot of very expensive fashionable clothes. I made six figures a year traveling around the world and getting paid to have sex with God knows how many thousands of men - only, of course, counting the ones that paid for it.

At some point I recall reading that something like 10 % of men report having more than 10 sexual partners a year. And I thought, "Shit, I have that many in a day when I spend the night at sex clubs." I am a cheap whore and I will be buried in a massive condom. Hopefully bursting full of cum - which I will purchase, since I plan to have none left by the time I die.

So really, when you think about it, turning 40 should be about wisdom, and maturity, and easing into peace of mind. Not partying.

Take my word for it, BVB. These years can be a time to remake yourself and focus on inner beauty, not superficial things. You really do need to just grow up.

Well Dahlin, you can fuck that bullshit. And if by remake, you mean a face lift, well that is being considered...;)...as to the rest of it, I'm right with the Lord, and I plan on leaving this world with a smile on my face.

P.S. Seriously for a moment. I applaud your life and all that you have done to better the lives of those that could not do for themselves. You are to be commended.

I was never bright enough, focused enough, nor aware enough to make any such contribution, but in my own small way, I would like to think that I made a difference in the lives of those around me, and that I am leaving this world just a little bit better than I found it... If after I am gone, on some warm and cloudless summer day, someone that I had an acquaintance with, happens to remember me, and that memory brings a smile to their face, then that alone will suffice for me, and I will consider it a life well lived...cheers

I have no doubt that will be the case, my dear friend.

Not that I wish for your untimely demise. But as we reflect on the meaning of midlife crisis, we reflect on the very meaning of life, and the depth and the profound moments we have shared. I am sure you will be remembered lovingly by many of the finest members of our community. And yes, a smile will come to their face, not for recollection of your prurient interests, but for the deeper things that really matter most in life.

I don't plan on living much past 65 or 70, so I think of myself as middle-aged now, at 35.

Oh to be young again. If you only knew.....

SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH

a poem by Beatrice Boyle, USA

I have seen spring’s awakening

And basked in summer’s sun

I have watched in awe

As autumn’s colors softly sprung

Now that winter’s here

Amid the softly falling snow

I mourn for the beauty

That was lost so long ago.

Oh sweet bird of youth

You lavished me with your love

Whispering sweet nothings

Under twinkling stars above

You led me to believe

I’d spend eternity with you

Then without a warning

You disappeared from view!

Down through the years

I have searched for you in vain

All I have are memories

Of you that remain

Now, most of my songs

Have been sung

But I cling to the melody

Of when we were young

I was deeply closeted and in fevered denial of my gayness as a young man. Married with kids and pretending I was happy. But it probably did save my life, since I didn't do the anonymous, promiscuous thing. My wife and I had gay friends who died so young. One of my sons' godfathers died at 26. This essay hit me hard. Since I became a widower and single father I've been more honest and I am sometimes wistful about having been so inhibited when I was young. But again, that may have saved me. So I try to live in the here and now. As both a dad and (I think) a DILF. But I never want to forget those we lost.

Wow, two huge inspirations in one day. And poetry no less.

This made me think of a way to honor you, BVB. Because you know we are all huge fans of yours.

Your moving words reminded me of one of the deep and powerful and elegant homages to love and memory of recent times, created by one of the most profound artists of our time, Taylor Swift:

The song captures the true essence of enduring love so poignantly that it launched countless covers that plumb the depths of the true meaning of the kind of well lived life you will be remembered for. Here is one of the best ones:

With that in mind, I penned these words to let you know how so many of us will remember you, and how there is a blank space in our hearts waiting to write your name.

What a life, oh BVB

You have seen such incredible things

Penis, escorts, whoring, gin

Getting tied up and fucked in sex slings

Oh my God, what a hole

Too bad it's ninety years old

Love's a game, and you played.

Boy toy money, stripper bars

All the great places you have been

Bringing smiles to rentboys' faces

Sharing "respect" with Killian

You've made thousands of "friends"

Spend millions by the time it ends

They'll grab your cock in their hand

They can even make you cum once a weekend!

We'll remember you forever

You'll be part of our whorestory

You can tell us when it's over

If it was worth the STDs

Got a long list of "ex-boyfriends"

And a dick bigger than your brain

Cause we know you are a big payer

And you love the game.

Now you're old and senseless

You pushed it way too far

Sex leaves you breathless

You get kicked out of bars

Got a long list of "ex-boyfriends"

And a dick bigger than your brain

But we got a blank space, BVB

And we'll write your name

Anal lips, crystal snorts

You get high on incredible things

Purchased kisses, pumps and pearls

You lived your life as a big Drama Queen

I know just what you want

To get fucked every day this month

Wait the best is yet to come - oh yeah!

Moaning, cumming, perfect sex

You live on a diet of sperm

Forum Delis filled with studs

Keep you always lusting like

"Oh my God, who is he?"

Don't bother, it's just JD.

You know where to go when you flee

Cause darling, you know Killian will feed you his sweet cream

We'll remember you forever

You'll be part of our whorestory

You can tell us when it's over

If it was worth the STDs

Got a long list of "ex-boyfriends"

And a dick bigger than your brain

Cause we know you are a big payer

And you love the game.

You only want love if it's three things

Pretty boys, Caucasians, and twentysomethings

You only want love if it's three things

Pretty boys, Caucasians, and twentysomethings

Now you're old and senseless

Sex leaves you breathless

As to the article: Essentially: You should feel guilty because your friends died and you didn't

Really not insightful at all as far as I am concerned.

As for men in their 50's, you are not middle aged, you are old. You chose to be a fine wine or vinegar. But if you start with sour grapes, you will be vinegar no matter how you distill it.

That sign should really read: Keep Calm and Bend Over (Life: I am going to fuck the shit out of you)
