3 weeks ago I upgraded to AOL 9.0 within a matter of days I twice had various screenames and profiles removed by AOL TOS [Terms of Service] Gestapho and had to go through the apologies thing with their Call Center. One of the calls appeared to be answered in India

I also read on an Frequent Flier Airline site that they cannot use the Name "Virgin Atlantic Airways" on AOL anymore as it is treated as Porn Spam and goes directly to Junk Mail.

I have now reverted back to AOL 8.0 and things seem betetr again.

Any other AOL members had any similar problems with 9.0?

Not specifically the problems you had... but definitely more problems with sending male and such. I am giving it a few more weeks to see if it is still a pain, because other aspects of it are good.

If it continues, I may revert back as well.

I just do not get why all of you are so hooked on AOL?They charge much more and have crappy service. And you are supporting the Cases'support of right wing religious wackos(coral ridge ministries)

And your email and "private"info are totally violated by their practices and procedures nazis,,,you all complain-yet you stay with them...it is your buisiness of course-but please tell me WHAT IS THE ATTRACTION?

I had to spend a lot of time removing all traces of AOL from my system so that it would not pop-up when I reboot. And speaking of pop-ups,I have ATT and I never have any from their advertisers-never,I was innudated with pop-ups when I had AOL-how rude!

>3 weeks ago I upgraded to AOL 9.0... One of the calls appeared to be answered in India

I must confess that I'm an AOL-hater after trying to use their software many years ago. I do have a relative that works in one of their few remaining USA call centers. He confirmed that the majority of the customer service calls are being handled in India. The main reason is the cheap labor. I believe the average salary for an AOL employee in India is less than $5 PER DAY!!

A problem my relative has noticed is that when language problems arise, the employees in India usually just hang up and force the customer to call again. I believe it's common for calls and difficult problems to AOL to be transferred multiple times without resolution.

I, too, am amazed that AOL is still being used when there are much better and cheaper alternatives.

It's a coincidence. I use AOL 9.0 as my second ISP and haven't run into any problems as you mentioned. And I have a screen name that they would love to cancel.

Their new spam filter has a few kinks, so check your spam box frequently and it will learn what you don't consider spam.

Most of the time you have problems wi a screen name it is because another member reported it, not the AOL bots finding it.

The new interface seems more user friendly than the old one, it has a few nice features in this version .. but I mostly use it for their extensive music content all in one place, very easy to find stuff that way and really enjoyable for me at 9.95 x month it's worth it.

And I can communicate easily with escorts who mostly use AOL and find it easy to follow up with them via IM or email as they are on fairly often.

Would I use AOL for any rel Internet surfing nope nor would I use it for anything important or my primary email address.

AOL B A D !

AOL is the worst pile of crap I've ever been forced to use. For an ISP everybody is so much better off with Earthlink or AT&T or just about anybody... And the AOL DSL service blows as well.

That said there are a couple good points, great number of access numbers all over the world and good parental blocking (I would guess). Also, I would bet I'm missing quite a lot, not ever being able to go into the chat rooms, from what I hear it may be better then Craig's List...

BUT it's still AOL, with all the crap it does to your system and the simple fact that they do not want any of us (escorts/clients) as customers is all I need to keep me away forever... I just wish the fuckers would stop buying good products like ICQ and Winamp and infesting them with ads, spreading install AOL icons *all over* systems and taking these products backwards in their developments...

I agree with you on AOL. There are several kinks in version 9.0. I think they will work them out. I was part of the beta testing for it for quite some time before they went live with it. The new look of it is great but the mail is a problem. I have been told that many of my messages from there do not get to where they are headed and vice versa. I have reported those bugs to AOL and I am sure they are working on each of them now. :) Or, at least sometime in the near future.

Lucky... you have been on my case lately. First you didn't like my definition of twinks, and now you are against my painful males!

:D

Can I make it up to you by bringing a couple of currently unemployed dancing twinks from Taboo to the Gaiety in October??

Part of the email problems AOL is having is based on a legal action from a Texas based ISP that handles about 15% of all email in the world. I cannot find their name at the moment. But AOL was ordered to stop blocking email from their domains and has ignored the court order. In fact AOL has filed a countersuit in a different district and the mail is still being blocked.

Maybe one of the readers here might know more about this case. The ruling and then subsequent contempt charge happened in late August.

On another AOL issue it is true that they have moved much of their customer service / tech support to India as the original author of this thread remarked.

Three weeks ago, I also downloaded version 9....and was having numerous problems similar to yours. My address book on all my screenames was deleted as well as my filing cabinet. Finally called them and spoke with someone who informed me that the "download version" was still not completely "error free" and that I should delete it and re-install version 8. He told me to wait until version 9 comes out on disc.

After reading the above replies, I think I'll remain on AOL.

Two issues:

(1) Never, never download AOL. Get the CD! I don't know about Version 9.0, but Blockbuster usuually has them for free. Unless you have DSL or a cable modem, there's a good chance of the download getting corrupted due to the sheer size and time it takes. I suppose even with high speed, it could get corrupted.

(2) I have e-mail accounts on other Web Sites. I still find AOL to be the most user-friendly and provide the most funcitionality, such as undeleting accidently deleted mail (within that day) and checking to see if your mail was read if the person to whom you sent e-mail is also on AOL. I find these e-mail features and the extras which AOL provides very useful. I guess that's why some of us put up with the nonsense and things like customer service in India.

Well,I guess there are folks willing to spend 1/3 more than I do for the crappy service,Popups, spam, and 100 ads a day asking if you want to A:lengthen your penis by 1 to 3 inches,or B:if you want a tiny camera to spy on someone.

I still just do not get it

Especially when you know that there are better and cheaper alternatives out there.

Some folks are too afraid of change for their own good.

There must be a reason they are the #1 ISP in the world. I use it and have never had and of the horror problems alot of people tell me about.:+

Marketing,,,that is the only reason they are succesful.

As HL Menkin put it"No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the american public"

or as Barnum put it "there is a sucker born every minute!"

But Hey,I am glad you are happy,I get so few reports of people that are happy with AOL that a glowing report is a refreshing change.

This is a very valid point that is often overlooked. But don't blame just AOL, as all the large corporations in America are moving IT operations and customer service to India, the Phillipines and other countries, causing the layoffs of tens of thousands of American workers every month.

This is the so called "world based economy" aimed at making the obscenely rich and overpaid ceos and board members even more rich by increasing the margin of profitability on their stock holdings.

In other words, you don't have to look to Al Qaeda to find the true terrorists to American society. This policy, called "outsourcing" does not care how many Americans are put out on the streets or how much customer dissatisfaction it causes, not to mention the security risks to their customers financial information that is put into the hands of foreign nations, just so the big shots can get even filthier richer. :(
