I'd never want to hire him again even if I were hiring. But I'll admit to being curious as to what he looks like now. He’s already had multiple good experiences. Firsthand. What exactly is being questioned? Whether he’s still hot? Whether he’s too old? If he has to ask, maybe it wasn’t that good to begin with. Hire him and find out. He’s older too.

The problem is that the op said the experience was in the past. Given the longevity of Tony’s career, that covers a lot of territory. Was he talking about experience 15 or 20 years ago and if so then it’s reasonable to ask is the provider still giving good service.

This isn’t a problem. If five people were to say he sucks, but every one of my own personal experiences has been great, what exactly am I supposed to do with that? Ignore my firsthand experience based on opinions from people I’ve never met? That doesn’t make much sense. At some point, your own experience has to count for something.
