Teachers in High School Showers

To me, having gone through HS in the early 70's, when high school/college/YMCA's all had multi-spigot showers in one room, I find great amusement in the newfound prudishness around purposeful nudity in specific settings. Most every public shower area in schools, gyms, spas - all public shower rooms are cubicles now. Mustn't make the children feel uncomfortable. 

Yet - and this is what amuses me - in the gay community, your digitized junk needs to be available for strangers' perusal before anyone will respond to a swipe. Selective modesty.

This is triggering a memory for me of a high school math and gym teacher.  He also coached our baseball team and surely looked like a baseball player: tall and slender and of ideal body proportion.  His last name was Slavic, and he had an Eastern European-sort-of handsomeness.  Not sure how he ended up showering with us pubescent boys on occasion, but he had a long beautiful cock in the 8"- 9" range.  I had to sneak peaks at him while we showered and to this day remember what for me was his irresistible manly beauty.

My memory is of junior high school where we were required to shower after PE. But most guys just avoided it one way or another. Brings back fond memories of 7th grade swimming classes in 1973-74. Our Jr High School had a large pool, and we were required to take swimming as part of our required gym classes. When I was a teenager, we had swim classes in PE. However, we didn't have any of these scenarios. Adults rarely came into the locker room, and everyone wore swimming trunks in the showers. At the beginning of swim season, almost everyone dressed under a towel. Toward the end, I was the only one still dressing under a towel (and T-shirt). To be honest, I was always aroused, so I didn't want anyone to notice.

I was a wrestler in high school and after gym class wrestling we were told to take a shower.  I was always erect or nearly so after wrestling, which is not unusual in the sport.  At the beginning, I felt self conscious about it.  In time, it made no difference.   I think American attitudes toward nudity is ridiculous and even now, at the gym I attend, there are men showering with shorts and dressing and undressing under a towel.  This gym is predominantly gay, so this behavior is surprising.  On the other hand, in the steam room I have seen all sorts of sexual activity up to and including a guy being pig roasted.

What I find most odd about your story is that the school was providing the swimsuits so you had to stand around naked to wait for someone to give you one.  Why weren't students required to just bring their own like they'd bring their other gym clothes?

Younger guys are amazed when I tell them that from 7th grade we always took communal showers after physical ed in the nude. My high school was probably 85% of German ancestry so I recall some lean blue-eyed blonds fondly. I never saw a coach or gym instructor in the locker rooms, though.

It’s bizarre to reflect that we’ve returned to puritanical norms re nudity while, concurrently, porn consumption has risen logarithmically!

We had the same setup, in roughly the same era. Suits were color coded for size, we were showed a specific knot to make in the drawstring so they didn't get tangled up in the wash (a knot I still use, 50-odd years later 🙂).  We lined up after the showers to put the suits in a laundry bin. I've heard that back then some pool filters would get clogged from fibers from some types of fabrics, so we used the school-supplied nylon suits.

You are spot on! I definitely remember the suits being colored coded for size and being told about the specific knot to make the drawstring for laundry

In our classes we bought two sets of gym clothes (provided by the school) to rotate as part of back-to-school. If you forgot to take them home from school at least once a week showers weren't going to help your smell. I also have read about, but have no personal memory of, kits and even shared jocks to grab as you entered the lockerroom, laundered by the school. The swimsuit thing seems like where that started, as nude swimming was for the filters and as suits were introduced it allowed uniformity of color and material.

Official high school competitive kit were laundered by the school and handed out before meets and collected after.

Well, given some of the responses here I think its the adults that would be uncomfortable from the leering eyes of pubescent boys.

Anyway, I never experienced cubicle showers until private gyms took off in the 80s/90s. I don't get them from a users perspective... its far easier to clean an open area with fewer nooks and crannies... and one would think an open shower would discourage bad behavior, from cruising to peeing in the shower room. Frankly, I miss the horseplay and comaraderie of a shower room, where casual nudity a catalyst for that, not the goal.

My understanding is that as your PE (gym) period got later in the day they got more lax about enforcement, to the extent that the last period of the day was often assigned to kids who had some physical or religious objection or were special ed.

The reason was that classroom teachers would complain about smelly boys in their classrooms. Today they must complain about teaching in a fog of Axe Body Spray instead.

I never cared and showered at every opportunity because I was a secret naturist at an early age and enjoyed the public experience.

Wrestling should remain a sport requiring thorough showers because of the viruses spread by skin to skin contact. I've found that wrestlers and rugby players have a more old fashioned sensibility about communal bathing. 

I never saw any untoward behavior in a sauna until I started frequenting a KSpa a few years ago and there it is out-and-out brazen, to the point that signs are everywhere forbidding the practice. I now go on weekend days which are more family days and that behavior doesn't happen at those times. I hope.

What era were you a teenager?  In the mid 70s, there was no dressing or undressing with a towel around your waist in my experience.

In fact, in the 70s shy dudes got roasted more than they would have if they just embraced their baby fat, hairless state, or size. That's what the body positivity and clothes free movements promote. Very few of us are perfect and even then its subjective, and we learn physical and mental health is paramount, leading to better outcomes than letting the video game and cheetos crowd shower in private at home. There was enough horseplay in an area of hard wet surfaces I don't fault the supervision, but moreover, showers were a great equalizer as well. Generally we showered in silence (get it over with quick and get out) or horseplay- I remember a bully once sarcastically saying "Ooo...(Buck) you're such a man!" In a crowd of about a dozen of us. To which I replied, "you would look there!" Shut him down quick, in and out of gym class for a while. What's he going to do? Jump me? The little shit.
