Guys, please give me some ideas on how I can consume more unflavored psyllium husk powder. I don’t mind Metamucil. But, I’d like to get some variety in how I consume psyllium husk for fiber. I have irritable bowel syndrome and keeping a steady flow of fiber combined with avoiding trigger foods really helps. And, a very regular pretty significant intake of fiber is the only way I can bottom. Is it good in coffee or hot tea? Can I just sprinkle it over some other foods? I've never tried it in hot drinks, BUT, I have tried to use it in stews as a thickener. Epic fail. Unlike flour or corn flour (cornstarch), which works fine to gradually thicken the liquid as a whole, psyllium formed into gelatinous globs in the stew. What I have done successfully is add it to cereal (for me, along with fruit and yoghurt as well as milk). Adding a tablespoon works fine (adjust the amount of milk to get a consistency you like). I suspect it would also work in smoothies or in yoghurt without the cereal but I haven't tried either of those. (I'm not suggesting the abomination that is a kale smoothie, although if you're a masochist that would give you more fibre.) + Just Chuck 1
+ Just Chuck Posted October 19 Author Posted October 19 I had an idea and I’m going to try an experiment. I had a shaker of dried onion powder that was well beyond its best use by date. I am soaking the label off of it. I’ll wash it and fill it with psyllium and I will try sprinkling it on some things where it wouldn’t be noticeable. A little psyllium would probably be un-noticable in PBJ sandwich, in a bean burrito, or on a cheeseburger. A fraction of a teaspoon here and there should add up.

+ SirBillybob Posted October 20 Posted October 20 (edited) There are two consumables that won’t ever be successfully camouflaged in a Michelin star dish or a signature cocktail: cod liver oil and natural psyllium husk. My failsafe method for years for downing the sludge that results from mixing psyllium in water is to flavour the water with a small amount of low cal Crystal Light powder from KraftHeinz. A little goes a long way to make swallowing it more bearable. I hope the additives aren’t IBS triggers, though. Edited October 20 by SirBillybob + Just Chuck 1

It's probably one of the most disgusting things I've ever had to try. I too have IBS (now in remission). The capsules are better than trying to add to drinks. I doesn't really dissolve like Metamucil. After trying a variety of natural and over the counter things, many of which where prescribed by my doctor, I found Senna Tablets work the best and they are natural and inexpensive. I take 2 Senna Tabs in the evening before bedtime. Also I cut out white breads and got used to a Sprouted Multigrain Bread. For some reason the fact the the multigrains are sprouted seem to make a world of difference on my system. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me anything else. Best of luck! + Just Chuck 1

Michelin star dishes and signature cocktails are all about show and appearances. Taste, flavour, heaven forbid health effects, are not just unwanted, they are in opposition to their very purpose. A sugar hit. Likewise, popping a pill or a capsule can be the best way to manage a health issue, but it can also be a short-cut, an easy way to resolve something rather than doing something that could be achieved by personal effort, perhaps difficult effort. Chacun à son goût. There are ways of incorporating psyllium in plain dishes where it becomes unnoticeable. Dishes where soft breadcrumbs might be used to bind other ingredients, meatloaves, rissoles, burgers. Things where elegance isn't the objective. That is not to say that capsules, commercial fibre powders and gummies can't be part of your decision, but often for pennies on the dollar for those options, simple psyllium husks can also be part of your solution. Just learn the places where it won't work. + Just Chuck 1

I do find that if you drink it very quickly after mixing it goes down easier and the solubility process, that otherwise amounts to sludge if you leave it too long in the glass to absorb all the fluid, finishes in your gut. I add chicken bouillon powder to the water when I make instant rice. Today I also added 1/2 cap of Miralax, as well. I didn't notice it at all, but it did the trick. Danny-Darko and + Just Chuck 1 1
