I grew up solidly middle class.  Got a degree in accounting and worked in accounting/finance jobs for 40 years. I did okay but never got a really big salary.    Starting saving for retirement in my 20's via company 401k.  When I changed jobs I ALWAYS rolled my old 401k into the new one.  In my later years I maxed out the annual 401k contribution. Except for a few early years was always 100% invested in stocks and I never panic-sold when the market went down.  

So, start early and be consistent.
