Remembrance Day - Veterans Day - Armistice Day

Today marks the 106th Anniversary of the Armistice that was signed in a railway carriage at Compiègne, and which came into force at 11am, drawing a close to the 'War to End all Wars'.

I am just watching the broadcast of the National Remembrance Day service at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The Address was given by Her Excellency Sam Mostyn, the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia.

Here in the small town where I grew up, the Eleventh Hour was marked by the siren at the local fire station sounding for one minute, a commemoration that I had forgotten occurred.

As the hour for commemoration approaches around the world, I wish all those who served and those who love and care for them the peace of a period of quiet reflection on the sacrifice that they and countless others made. The optimism of those who 106 years ago dared to hope that the memory of what they had witnessed would make further wars unthinkable has sadly been unfulfilled. We can but hope that those who follow us will continue to strive to achieve what we and those who came before us have not.

Lest We Forget

After the ceremony, Her Excellency and the Prime Minister announced that His Majesty the King had approved the award of the Victoria Cross for Australia to the late Private Richard Norden, for most conspicuous acts of gallantry in action in Bien Hoa Province on 14 May 1968. Private Norden was killed in a motor cycle accident in 1972 while on duty as a police officer in the Australian Capital Territory Police Force.

This morning's national Remembrance Day service was conducted in the forecourt of the Australian War Memorial under partly cloudy skies. The service was attended by the Governor-General, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.

The service in Brisbane was attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, the Princes Royal, who is in Australia as the Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Australian Corps of Signals to mark the centenary of the Corps.

Thank you for sharing. I watched the Canadian Remembrance ceremony in Ottawa and it closed with God Save the King... in French. Was nice to hear it. I wonder if any other commonwealth countries would have it sung in French?

I remember growing up in Toronto, we would have a minute of silence at 11 AM. Everyone would stop what they were doing for a moment of reflection. I wonder if they do it these days. Here in NYC, it's business as usual and no one really observes.

Here, in America, I'm experiencing a creeping sense of discomfort this Veterans Day.  All my life there has been a fulfilling sense of pride and admiration throughout our country for our military and other federal troops.  Due to some resent administrative changes some of our troops have become likened to marauding thugs, and I fear that prior sense of pride and admiration may be fading among our citizens.

I hope I'm wrong.

You are very wrong... in many respects.
Bozo will leave it there. Anything more may violate the no-politics rule.

All of my life Remembrance Day has been a significant day for Canadians.  More significant than what I've observed in the USA.  I think Canadians may feel a greater sense of connection to WWI and WWII because Canada entered those conflicts when they began, and not part-way through.  That said, the treatment of veterans here needs to improve, and the importance of the day needs to be communicated better to younger generations who take it for granted that they have never had to go to war.
