Have you ever avoided seeing a movie in a theater due to its length?

If the movie really can't be edited to under 2 1/2 hours or so, why not provide an intermission. Agree? Disagree? I wonder how common our concerns are.

I think most people can sit for more than 3 hours without going to the bathroom. I just watched this movie in Bogotá and did not need a break. The theater was full and I only saw one child going to the bathroom (escorted by an adult).

I would be for an intermission in case the movie was so perfectly written and edited that missing a few minutes would jeopardize your experience. I do not think this is the case. The first part of the film is key to understand what follows. After that, if you leave for a few minutes, you may miss some nice to see scenes, but it would not be a serious loss.

I liked the movie. I wanna watch it again at home without the 4D effects, I found them quite annoying, much more annoying than the length.

I would avoid sucking a dick if it had 4D effects, which would be more annoying than the length.

When I saw Pulp Fiction my seat was seat was on the aisle of the row and I had my feet poised to spring up for the last 25 interminable minutes as it just kept going on and on.  The first hour of the film was brilliant but the last 9 hours needed massive editing.

I obviously wasn't the only one feeling like that.  As soon as the credits began the entire packed audience stood as one, put on their coats, and silently left.  I've never seen anything like that happen any other time.

You must have missed Burton and Taylor's films

Well, I've certainly avoided sucking those with excessive girth. If it's simply too long, I put my right hand around the base and just suck the end.... 😉 If it's too thick, this is all I can do:

Several years ago, a theater in my area offered a special presentation of the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, each movie shown with a break in between each film to go out and get lunch or dinner nearby.  The whole run must have been about 14-15 hours.  It was truly butt-numbing by the end, but I enjoyed the event.

These days I don't avoid long movies, but I rarely buy drinks at the concession.

Ugh. I have not been to the movies in years. If memory serves me right, the last movie I saw in the theater was Ted in 2012.

Who wants to rush to get to a dirty theater in time to see fifteen minutes of commercials before the movie starts blaring while your shoes are suddenly sticky from the soda someone spilled at the earlier showing. Sitting close to strangers who cough without covering their mouths, answer their phones during the movie, brush up against you as they scoot out of your row to go to the bathroom only to do the same thing in reverse ten minutes later is gross.

What sane person would pay fifteen dollars for the privilege? Nowadays home entertainment systems are good, we all have air conditioning, we can snack at home without paying $10 for $0.25 of popcorn and an even higher mark-up for soda or candy. And God forbid you might want to snack on raw veggies or drink an adult beverage.

Add to that: the quality of television content has gotten very good while movies are mostly dreck.

I'm in agreement with a lot of what you say.  I tend to see movies in theaters only if it's something I really can't wait to see, or if it's something that should be seen on a huge screen. I average maybe four trips to the theater a year these days.

The short answer for me is, “yes.”  I also avoid theaters because of the cost and because of the audience.  I’ve worked in the film industry for three decades.  Producers send screeners every year for awards season.  I prefer to watch their content at home.  A great many of the men and women who direct these piles of pretentious mind numbing minutiae are some of the most narcissistic, self absorbed, self righteous, duplicitous degenerates I have ever met.  For all of their publicized rhetoric to the contrary, they are amongst the most profoundly racist, homophobic, sexist, ageist, smug, self satisfied monsters on the planet.  Wait…what was the question?  Oh, right…I love my job!

I resent it when I go to see a 3hr film and it’s obvious that it could have used a lot more editing to move the story along. The recent movie “Tar” comes to mind.

Thought of your comment here watching Tár last night. I love long movies, but yes this one could have been edited down a bit (a lot). Ultimately I liked it….but slow start.
