The Powerball jackpot soared to an estimated $1.7 billion for Saturday night's drawing after no tickets came up winners of Wednesday's $1.4 grand prize, Powerball said. Saturday's pot of gold would have an estimated cash value of $770.3 million. Both totals are before taxes.

The winning numbers in Wednesday's drawing were 3, 16, 29, 61 and 69, with a Powerball of 22.

Saturday's windfall would be the third-biggest in U.S. lottery history, only trailing the world-record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot won on Nov. 7, 2022 and the $1.765 billion jackpot captured on Oct. 11, 2023. Both were won in California.

Mega Millions jackpot soars to $900 million after no winner in latest drawing. The next drawing is on Tuesday. It will have a cash option of $415.3 million.

Friday's drawing was the 38th since the jackpot was last won in Virginia on June 27 and is now the longest streak without a jackpot winner since the game began in 2002, according to a statement from Mega Millions.

The previous record of 37 drawings was set Jan. 22, 2021, when a $1.050 billion jackpot was won in Michigan, officials said.

Powerball jackpot hits $1 billion after no Wednesday winner

The Powerball jackpot has risen to an estimated $1 billion after nobody held the lucky grand prize ticket in Wednesday’s drawing. The winning numbers were 10, 16, 29, 33, 69, and red Powerball 22, with a Power Play multiplier of 3.

The jackpot has been growing steadily for the past few months, since the $1.787 billion jackpot in September – the second-largest in Powerball history. The odds of winning Wednesday’s jackpot were low – players had about a 1 in 292.2 million chance to win. Smaller prizes ranged from $4 up to $1 million and carried better odds of winning.

Are they really prepared to pay 1 billion to the winner?😵‍💫 That's an incredible amount of money; someone will be very lucky.

In the US the full jackpot is not paid out unless it is done so over a lengthy time period, as an annuity.  Most people likely opt for the 'lump sum' payment, which I believe is less than half the full amount, but you end up with somewhat less than $500M all at once.  And then that gets taxed, so you probably end up with only half again.  Still, $250M is not something to sneeze at.

In Canada we are not taxed on our winnings.  And our national lottery jackpots are paid in full as a lump sum.  However, our jackpots are not allowed to grow to those levels like PowerBall - I think ours maxes out at $80M.  But you get that $80M free and clear.  The odds are also better for our lotteries - still a very, very, long shot, but not 1 in 290 million.

Haven't caught lottery fever, this time.

My first inclination wouldn't be hiring a provider.

I would find new places to live that I could travel to.  Australia, Oregon Coast, Palm Springs, Scotland.

I might want to go with a sure thing. Someone I know I'm compatible with. But I think most of my previous friends have retired. One who hasn't is Mike Gaite.  So I think I'd fly him to me.

I think some of your previous friends might come out of retirement if they heard that you won the lottery.

In that case-and I'm not normally into orgies-but I'd hire Mike Gaite and Andrew Justice together.
