Monkey Pox & Massages

If someone has been vaccinated, could he still be a carrier and possibly transmit monkeypox?

My favorite masseur has been vaccinated - I believe him.  I am not, but I am trying to get vaccinated.  Am I taking a risk by getting a massage from him until I am vaccinated?  We get fairly playful during our sessions.

Thank you for the advice!

I can't find the direct answer to your question, though I keep reading discussions where they say you don't have to worry starting 2 weeks after the second dose.  And since they say "specifically, direct contact with the lesions that form as part of the rash."...it goes to reason that someone who is completely vaxed for it won't develop the lesions.

By “been vaccinated” is he fully vaccinated? I can’t find any place in NYC that will even schedule the 2nd shot.

He went to Toronto to get vaccinated, where he had no problem getting a same-day appointment.  I do not know whether the vaccinations there require a 2nd shot.

Here is a link to the City of Toronto page.  There is no mention of a second shot being required but I could be missing something.

Ah, as a former Toronto resident I so long for the Canadian socialized health system!

My guy said that the vax given out in TO is a single shot.  Not a 1-2 punch as it is offered in NYC,

"Typically, Imvamune is a two-dose shot, given 28 days apart, with the option for a booster two years later.

But in guidance for health-care professionals released in mid-June, Ontario said it would be using a "ring vaccination approach" and offering just a single dose in areas with confirmed cases — given the "current limited supply" of vaccines."

Like the early days of Covid, there seems to be uncertainty with this now as to 1 or 2 doses and also I guess depending on where you live as in UK, Canada, Germany there are offering a 1 shot of a different manufacturer. I got my "1st" shot Saturday in NYC, and they have on the vaccination receipt a place to be filled in after the "2nd" shot, so seems like they are planning on giving 2 here for now anyway. I just noticed on a fact sheet they handed us from the CDC saying "people who have received small pox vaccine in the past might only need 1 dose." But they did not ask if you had smallpox vaccine, nor anywhere on the sheet to even notate that...🤷‍♂️.

I'm not sure we are supposed to be able to schedule it ourselves.  The 2nd shot button on the site has been greyed out this entire time, but I was told when I got my shot that I would be contacted for my second one in 3 to 4 weeks.  So maybe they are just scheduling the 2nd one manually?  Dunno.

I was told yesterday I would be getting an email to schedule a second shot here in NYC, the technician made me verify my email address carefully for this reason.

Same when I asked yesterday getting my first shot. You can’t schedule your second shot at all - DOH will email you the day, time, place for your second shot.  It’s also in the confirmation email they sent almost immediately after the shot. I was told to check my email starting in about 3 weeks for the second shot appointment.

I found this information via Dr Carlton on Instagram who has been a valuable resource for the gay community providing up to date info on monkeypox as it becomes available...

This document is a non-comprehensive, crowdsourced list of where Monkeypox vaccinations are being provided in various U.S. cities while resources continue to be scarce. Much of this information is based on available information online or word-of-mouth.

I got my first dose in NYC today. I asked about second dose and they said they people are starting to become eligible for second doses and that they are beginning to load second doses into the booking system, but it's not live yet. They said we'd be contacted. But even one dose provide solid protection after 28 days.

I'd like to wait til second dose before getting another massage, but it'll get harder to resist after 28 days.

I don't know if there are any studies on it, but I'd like to see them add the childhood smallpox vax to that chart.

I wonder to what extent the income of masseurs and escorts has dropped ... it must be really tough on them.

I will say that my regular guy was very understanding when I mentioned to him that I would wait until I could get vaxxed before seeing him again.

It’s quiet. It might be because it’s August and people are away (my August is traditionally quiet). It might be because people are struggling to afford treats. It might be fear of pox. It might be all of those reasons. It is tough!! Send money 😉

I know that question has been asked a lot. I'm sure they will look into it, but just looking at NYC data we can see people 50+ are getting it.

I would also note that the smallpox vaccine given in the 60s/70s included a booster recommendation after 3 years if still in a high smallpox risk area.

MODERATOR NOTE:  While this is all excellent conversation, this thread is starting to drift off topic.  Please limit discussions in this thread thoughts about getting messages during this period.

In the Men's Health Forum there are other threads discussing the virus itself and on vaccination.  Below is a link to one of them.

A masseur in New York, whom I have been seeing for the last 5 years, told me this morning that his business dropped from 3-4 clients a day to 3-4 clients a week.  That's got to hurt!  I feel bad for him!

Got vaxxed yesterday myself, but I will give it a few weeks to kick in.
