I cancelled a trip to Vegas this week. Nothing about travel seems fun these days. The COVID measures being deployed around table games are dreadful; I have no interest in any of that joylessness. I probably won't visit Vegas again for a long time.

Haven’t been there since 2007 and doubt that I’ll ever visit again. Not my cup of tea. I imagine this sand city’s days are numbered.

Horrible to hear. Wtf are all those out of work contortionists going to do???

I'm still tentatively booked back in late August, but if the shows aren't back and Covid-19 cases continue their surge (general not Vegas specific), I really don't see the point in going either (other than to keep my comps active). Still... who knows!

Thanks for the updates.

Most casinos are extending status by a year. They are also extending status for at least a few months. If your points are with Caesars's just get their credit card or look at their dining program, that's how I keep my points active when I can't gamble.

I go a couple times a year and Vegas was the last time I flew back in early March. I had a conference in late April and that got pushed back to June and then to August. I'm hoping it cancels or gets moved back to the late fall, Vegas is too hot in August and if none of the shows are open there won't be much to do.

The casinos have also lowered or done away with other fees such as valet and parking. Hotel rooms are dirt cheap. Mid-level hotels such as Rio and Palace rooms are around $35/ night. Strip ultras such as Bellagio, are less than $100/ night. Unthinkable!

Now they just need to kill the "resort fee" and we will be talking!

a quick hotwire search for places on the Strip the middle of next week reveals that there's a place available for $9/night, plus taxes/fees.....further shrewd reading between the lines (sometimes helpful at location-revealed-after-purchase hotwire) shows that it's the Strat, formerly the Stratosphere, with a mandatory resort fee of $35/night.....welcome to Las Vegas!

I love Australian consumer law that mandates that the advertised price is the final price. Small print 'additional charges' are illegal.

Atlantic City is still shutdown but got an email from Harrah's saying that they are accepting reservations for July 2 and forward

Being in South Jersey I always preferred to do meetups in a AC casino hotel but not sure how safe and comfortable I would be staying overnight there and eating at one of the restaurants.....

Wynn first to reopen their all-you-can-eat buffet....(opening today 18.6)

90 food items on the buffet menu....

food brought to table by servers.....

diners can order unlimited / as much as they want within a 2 hour period.....

When relying on a server to bring you another plate of food, it might work out financially for Wynn.

They can now, in essence, control the speed at which people consume, something they couldn't do before when allowing walk-ups. Adding a 2 hr window to this also helps them keep control of the insane amounts of waste that these things generate.

of course, a significant/fun part of any buffet is the ability to browse at your own pace, select exactly how much you want of any item, and return to it exactly when you want.......all that is no revelation, of course

so this "server brings the food" thing takes away from a huge part of the buffet experience and may ??? not be terribly successful....

My Vegas sources tell me that Wynn's buffet, which opened today, is now sold out until Monday of next week.

The pent-up buffetdom seems to be real :)

So, I drove to a casino, which comped a couple of nights, just to check out the new rules. I have enjoyed casino fun for decades, but it's over. It's not just the annoying mask requirement, which makes it difficult to hear what anyone is saying; the food options are minimal and lacking; I can't handle cards, a bummer because that means some of my favorite table games are not open; some tables have too few players, which drives down the odds; there's no comraderie or fun among the players; an atmosphere of misery hangs over the place; the table limits are higher to compensate for the lack of gamblers, which means it's harder to weather the dry spells; there's no drink service at the tables; there's no room/housekeeping service; they removed the coffee-makers from the rooms, and on and on...... Until casino life returns, I do not foresee wasting money, time, and effort to fly to Vegas to experience this level of blah. Staying home and savoring country life is a heckuva lot more fun than this.

Their cases are going up sharply. The gaming commission needs to get their heads out of their asses and require masks on the casino floor, not just at tables.

I "stupidly" braved a casino in a different jurisdiction. While automated temperature checks were performed and masks were mandatory upon entry, there were so many people walking around smoking (with masks removed obviously) that I definitely did not feel safe. Also observed proactive cleaning staff continuously cleaning the slot machines... but continually disinfecting the ones that were turned off instead of the ones in use. How does that help anything?

Still tentatively booked for Vegas in late August. Still not sure I want to go. My airline has already cancelled my original booked flights (but rebooked at no additional cost and allowed me to make no cost changes). Hope this isn't a weekly thing!

Will keep an eye on the transmission (not encouraging) and whether or not shows etc resume before making my final decision.

We’re probably a year away from some semblance of normalcy in these venues.
