I believe that. San Diego locals definitely have the coupon mentality. It also shows in the lack of high end retail and restaurants. I live here for work, and the traffic is easier than Los Angeles or San Francisco. Now that I think of it, I’m more likely to hire when traveling elsewhere. There are fewer hiring options here, so it’s a vicious cycle.

From an escorts perspective, San Diego sucks as well. Whenever I have gone guys are either cheap and trying to pressure a discount, or on drugs. I see 1 or 2 regulars in Del Mar and Solana Beach, then spend my free time at Blacks Beach during favorable weather, or head to Tijuana for tacos and beers.

I second that! I have a few great regulars in Del Mar and I go to see them specifically, but other than that, I don’t go to San Diego at all for the reasons that you mentioned.

This is a really interesting thread.

I lived in San Diego in 1979 and 1980. Back then, I was young and single so I had a very sociable time. I recall how many attractive young men came through San Diego; often they were transients or temporarily in SD. There were several popular gay bars and dance-clubs. There was even a gay bar outside the main gates to a military base where I picked up (or he picked up me) a very nice young Marine and I’ve fond memories of the long weekend we spent together.

In the last several years, I’ve been back in the Winter to stay in La Jolla. My feeling accords with others above in that the most attractive guys are either visiting or based in LA and they have to be offered at least an overnight in SD to make their travel worthwhile. I’ve met enthusiastic, visiting Australians there and also 2 different local guys who presented as str8 but surprised me by being obliging.

I love San Diego, but not for escorting. When I visited and if I hired, it was usually someone who traveled with me or I brought in from LA or elsewhere. The were only two I hired successfully and who lived in SD, Sean Cody's Ashton and this heavily tatted big butt muscled guy, who I think went by Simon. I had already had an established relationship with Ashton. Simon was someone I had never met before. I attempted to hire four other guys who were local at the time. One never responded back, two others left the area before I arrived (one of which left the night I arrived for a trip), and the last, Lucas Leon, got confused and got our scheduled day mixed up. It was the only day I had free time to meet. So we never did.

There are currently a number listed, I'd hire in a heartbeat. Out of the 17 that pique my interest, only 2 or 3 appear to be local.

With all that said, as some have already suggested, it may be better to bring someone in.

I lived in San Diego (a/k/a "Bland Diego" or "Hooterville by the Sea") from 2000 to 2016. If you think there is a lack of high-end restaurants and retail now, you should have seen it twenty years ago. The only reason for staying was my job. It relocated me to Phoenix in 2016 and I was happy to leave.

San Diego sucks for escorts. I come here each Spring for a work conference. Seriously, there is something wrong with the men here! ...they show up on drugs and cannot perform, they want to screen you in advance, they are just weird in their communications, or they arrange appointments and then cancel at the last minute. ...

The behavior you experienced is not limited to escorts and clients. This is everyday life trying to meet people in San Diego. It cuts across ages, neighborhoods, hooking up, making friends, and meeting guys to date.

When I lived there, I'd travel to LA or Palm Springs to hire escorts. I'd even travel to meet potential friends and dates.

I was scheduled to hit SD last summer/fall but of course, the pandemic hit so that was ruined. Didn’t have no plan to book providers but I wanted to try and tap into that military/navy market haha.

A buddy of mine was living in SD for 4 years and he’d always tell me about all the military guys he’d get from Craigslist. At times it was too easy.

I lived there from 2008 to 2013. Before and after I have lived on east coast: NYC, Boston, and Philadelphia.

San Diego was lovely for the weather and outdoor lifestyle. Agree with the blandness.

For guys, I used to go to LA for weekends. Tried to hire and San Diego and has about a 20% success rating. At best. Met some real freaks.

Hillcrest was my first LGBT community, how has the city dried up??

Unfortunately it just doesn't feel like it used to and its not because of the pandemic. I lot of the bars and clubs have closed and now it just feels like any other neighborhood.

it certainly was in the late 1970s/1980s. A Marine Corps base with a gay bar just outside its gates, a large number of transient visitors and many handsome young beach-goers and surfers meant there was an ever-changing population of hot and horny young men. I had many dates and never met a working guy. Of course, it helped that I was fit, young and goodlooking then.

Times have changed...

Many dates and many more anonymous hookups in San Diego in the late 70's/early 80's. Ah, the good old days......

I second the choice of collegestud. Sexy, entertaining, great in bed, and not a clock watcher.

Damn... what a memory!

As of now 111 guys listed in San Diego, obviously some are willing to travel there or have plans to go there on specific dates.

He's visiting from LA and would be my first choice. Obviously for the right amount most guys would travel from LA to SD.

Yes, 111 sounds like a lot. The minority have the icon below showing they are based in San Diego....and you’d be surprised how difficult it is to get a guy out of his WeHo enclave ?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I can’t find a way to search “based in...” their home port vs a traveler? And not the GPS “near me” that doesn’t really work.

Thank you for responding. A friend originally from Bonsall, now living in Cathedral City, stated Hillcrest had changed a lot. Raised in Chula Vista, but frequented Hillcrest/NorthPark/Little Italy a lot from 1987-1995.

Reminds me of the Duchess of Windsor. Her first husband was a military guy from the military base in San Diego. She grew bored of him within a short time, ditched him, and two husbands later married the King of England. (well ex-king, he had to give up the throne to marry her).

Went to show, if you want to succeed in life, get out of San Diego.

I have good memories of a trip to SD, but it was in mid 80's...looks as if things have changed a lot!

It is still a great place to visit (unless you want to hire an escort but there are other things to do).

Well said @rvwnsd.

I’d add that the climate is generally benign and SD makes for a better Winter vacation break than Key West nowadays. There’s still gay life in SD: I’ve had interesting encounters in La Jolla and at Black’s Beach. There are still nice young men who are happy to meet nice older men. It’s just not what it once was.

The Padres play a lot of night games in their beautiful stadium.

Lovely, I’m sure, but I’m not a sports fan. Except of the indoor variety, laying down with the lights turned low.
