yes, time flies....in all aspects of life

this is my 17th year on the forum.....I remember stories of hooboy's travails and how he always lost his computer in some faraway city....

when some old thread is resurrected (you know who you are!), I'm reminded of old forum members, now not active anymore, and the crazy characters we used to have......oh, wait......

My profile says I joined January 1, 1970! Yikes! I was a little boy then! Did the internet even exist then? I guess that means I'm an original member? How long is that?

Because of some quirk in the program, all of us who were active in the very early days of the old Hooboy site are shown as having joined on December 31, 1969 (we were given an explanation once, which I have forgotten). No, the Internet did not exist in its present form then. The personal computer hadn't even been invented yet. And although I had already been sexually active for a decade by then, I still had never seen an ad for an escort, much less hired one.

The start time on the program is midnight UTC/GMT on 31 Dec 69/1 Jan 70, so when it adjusts to local time in the US it's between 4pm (Pacific) and 7pm (Eastern) on 31 Dec. For me the 'adjusted time' is 10am on 1 Jan.

Unix stores dates/times as the number of seconds since the a specific date. The lowest value is zero representing January 1, 1970. I suspect the oldest members dates are set to -1. There hasn't be a huge cry for correction and it's better than NaN.

Hooboy 2000, Daddy took over Forum shortly thereafter, Message-forum.net started in 2005 when Hooboy passed. Guy Fawkes showed up in 2016.

So when did this start? I can't remember. Maybe it's old timers' disease.

As a relative newcomer, I’d enjoy more comments from long timers about how the site has changed. Similar topics discussed now? Is the breadth of topics the same? What’s improved? What do you miss?

I remember a member called Fin Fan Foom (I think I got the spelling OK) fondly. I was the saddest to see him go.

I think in a way this site is a lot less contentious but as a result, a bit less entertaining than it used to be. I still enjoy coming to the site daily, but apart from the political section, it is more an old man's pastime than an active sport. Sure courteousness and politeness are appreciated, but every now and again a claw bearing cat fight can be entertaining.

While I am sure that there are those who enjoy the large number of photos posted, I have mentioned in the past that for me, it is too much of a good thing. I think many come, look at the photos and go. It seems the new postings are generally posted by the same few people and the diversity of responders is less. These seem to be major changes.

Still, I do enjoy my daily visit. Sometimes several visits in a day, if a particular thread is getting a influx of thoughtful posts, rather than the +1 or me too that sometimes dominate.

As to posters who have left the scene, I miss Rick Munroe's dry humor.

I think I've been a member of this club since 1995 or perhaps a few years later. Have seen lots of folks come as well as go; ...have even met some of the members in Rio de janeiro during one of the fab parties which was held in 2003 (a while ago).

I luv Brasil!

...have found this site to be worthwhile in many respects!
