After this thread was posted I checked return fares for random dates in September, and from Canberra to New York it was about AUD2700 PY and AUD4700 on J. That's comparable to what you cite. These fares used the SQ service CBR-SIN and had an 18 hour layover in Singapore. Travel on SQ's service via Frankfurt was more expensive.

You may know my answer: If you travel constantly westward, ie returning from the Pacific via Europe, is the final jetlag as bad? I avoid the Pacific because of the horrendous time adjustment it causes me when I get home to DC. I never have that problem when traveling west however, and I wonder if stopping off in Europe for even a short time might make the home adjustment easier.

Logically a time difference is a time difference but I never get serious jet lag headed west.

I have been lucky in the jet lag dept. I live in Bangkok half the year. I take midnight flights over and get to my condo about noon. Just go on with my day and go to bed about 9pm, sleep all night and fine next day.

Coming back, I go either Cathay thru Hong Kong, or Qatar thru Doha. l leave about 9am and get home about 10pm. Just go to bed and have no issues next day. I know jet lag is an issue for a lot of people, but I also think some people obsess about it so much before trip it’s just worse than it needs to be. I used to fly to Bangkok about 6 times a year so got used to it. Now that I spend 6 months there, I only do it a couple of times a year. I came back last Thursday and the Hong Kong Boston leg was only 14 hours because of winds. Got in 1-1/2 hours early.

My former neighbor also had the same jet lag problems headed east as I do. For both of us a trip from the far east to DC, even with a layover, meant a week of horrible jet lag. Heading to the far east, no problem at all.

I’d take this in a heartbeat. I get to KL at least once a year. It beats 14+ hours to HK or Tokyo then a layover and another 4/5 hours to KL. The flight from Singapore to KL is under 2 hours and the Singapore Airport is more user friendly than the other two.

BTW Always wear compression hose on these long flights.

I have a friend in Boston that has taken this flight 3 times and a forth coming up next month. He connects to Bangkok. As @Benjamin_Nicholas mentioned this flight has been going since last fall. There is no regular economy , only Business and Premium Economy. Both classes come with a bit of enhanced service. If you book business class far enough out and a bit flexible with your dates, fare can be in the $3500 range.

He likes Singapore as an airline but he likes their fares.

I fly to Bangkok via Cathay Pacific but in the end we arrive about the same time.

Good to see ya... Your immense knowledge of commercial air is always appreciated! :)

I was so close to booking this SQ EWR-SIN flight (to connect to BKK) in late June, but ended up on the DFW-NRT-BKK with JAL. I always seem to get roped back into OneWorld whether I like it or not.

Well, that, and I love the JAL F lounges at NRT.

My friend has tried to get me to try the Singapore flight and I’ve come close, but in the end I have a lot invested in OneWorld status also. I take Cathay now and use their Premium Economy service. If I use Qatar I’ll do Business.

Sorry. I think Narita is the least friendly airport in the Free-world. I’ve gotten misdirected there too many times. I now will only negotiate it in a wheelchair which I marginally need in any event.

Recently flew TG F connecting to NH F BKK-NRT-LAX. NH chaperones their F passengers from connecting flight onto their flight so no chance of getting lost. Wonderful experience...getting driven literally THROUGH the TG lounge to the TG F Lounge, the hour long Thai massage before the flight, and a whole bottle of vintage Krug to myself in NH F (with Hibiki 17 as a chaser).

Krug>>>Dom ;)

"Free-world" … what you mean by that?

Yesterday was the inaugural flight of an Air Singapore route from Neward to Singapore non-stop. The plane takes the polar route and it takes 19 hours, The first flight actually arrived about 2 hours early due to favorable winds.

Any takers on this? I think Mr. Baldwin might be one candidate as he travels to the Orient frequently.

By the way 68 seats Cost about 4000 dollars each way.

I flew this flight 3 times before it was a suspended for a few years. Quite comfortable, and the timing is such that even I slept...we got very special assistance on arrival. Our bag came to our long as did the customs folks; and then an S600 MB to hotel...

I flew Emirates First Class from Sydney to Christchurch ... on credit card points. The 2009 Dom Perpignan was so-so, but the Hennessy Paradis was sublime. AND a heavy pour!

On an Emirates marathon as we speak. 8 hour flight to Dubai then 14 hours to JFK. On the first leg right now and they ran out of Dom (seriously?) so I’ll raise a glass of Paradis in your honor.

The shower says “max 2 people”. Any escorts up for joining the ultra-rare gay mile high shower club with me?

Btw...they block this site and RM (with a somewhat frightening “site banned in the UAE” splash screen) but VPN works fine.

Not about a 19 hour flight, but a somewhat shorter long haul sector. In the last couple of days the US Department of Transportation has given tentative approval for a Qantas-AA joint business venture for greater coordination of routes, fares and schedules between the two countries. As part of the proposal Qantas has indicated that when the venture receives final approval it will begin flying from Brisbane to Chicago, the airline's first service to ORD. They will also add BNE-SFO adding to existing routes from Sydney and Melbourne.

JAL F lounges at NRT.

+1

But The Wing at HKG is amazing too. Better shower cabanas, great food. And a Champagne bar.

Agreed.

Actually, it's better than almost any 'name' Champagne out there (Dom, Ace of Spades, Cristal).

Had friends over for blind tasting, probably ten years ago. Favorite was a 1989 Krug, then Veuve Yellow Label, Krug NV, Dom (don't recall the vintage), Moet White Star and Korbel (the ringer) in that order. Except one dude who thought Korbel was the bomb!

THOSE CX DAN DAN NOODLES THO :)

The day suites that overlook the tarmac at The Pier are my favorite. I'm an equipment geek.

The Pier is usually close to the DFW departure gate and I go there sometimes if I have a quick connection. Seat 2A on the DFW/HKG is my happy place.

Unless I do not sleep at all the day before the flight, I don't think I'm going to enjoy 19 hours on the air, even if I'm on Business or Premium Economy.

The longest I've ever been on was a 13-hour flight from NYC to Taipei. I bought an economy ticket with cash and used my points to upgrade to premium economy. In anticipation (not of the trip but of the travel time), I only slept for four hours the night before and I spent most of the day outside (the flight was at midnight) so I'm tired when I start making my way to the airport. I was awake during the dinner service but promptly fell asleep for eight uninterrupted hours once I finished the after-meal cognac. I went up to the galley and asked for the snack that I missed and a glass of Bailey's. I got another two hours of sleep from those. I spent the rest of the flight watching Avengers.

I've posted previously about Qantas' plans for additional long-haul fights. They have announced today that they will be using delivery flights for three B787s to conduct research into projected commercial flights between London and New York, and Australian east coast cities. The flights will carry about 40 people, made up of the crew and Qantas staff members.
