You might have misunderstood. What I read in his message is that he doesn't care - there are more important things.

Or I am too old and I give up, stop trying to look younger. Whatever it doesnt really matter.

I stay away from aestheticians. I go to a Plastic Surgeon for botox, fillers peels and some other non invasive procedures. I am not sure what you mean by facial, but if it is massage and moisturising etc, it feels good but it does nothing for the skin. And the purpose of the exercise is not to feel good but to look good.

If your pores are clogged, clearing them out is important. I've found that aestheticians are often very rough while doing extractions, plus they put on a bunch of creams that further clog the skin. A good dermatologist can do a better job.As for what I put on my skin, a salicylic peel really helps.

extractions??? this is last century and totally disgusting. Use acids to keep pores clear. Neostrata has very good exfoliators/cleansers.

I've found a combination of manual clearing and acids works best. Almost every major skincare place in NYC does both.

If the acids work and you never need anything else, more power to you.

by skincare place you mean aestheticians, beauticians etc. They do it because they are not allowed to do peels. I cant imagine a dermatologist doing it.

Big difference between the two. "Not caring" comes from a place of supreme confidence, knowing that you have nothing to prove.

"I'm too old, so I may as well not try" comes from resignation and powerlessness.

Aestheticians do peels all the time, just not the super strong TCA peels that require a week of recovery time. Some dermatologists do clean pores manually. Others don’t because it’s not particularly lucrative, but they often have an in-office facialist who does.

This aesthetician that I went to cleaned my pores manually. It was uncomfortable, but my skin looks smooth and with a lot fewer imperfections. I thought it was an hour well spent. I think @europeanman is confusing apples and oranges. I don't think reasonable people think that the treatments they get from aestheticians are any long-term remedy for lines, wrinkles, etc. On the other hand, if you're looking for a simple, non-invasive way to improve the appearance of the skin surface, an aesthetician is a reasonable option.

Well if your going for the best products that aren’t that expensive look for Korean brands. Korean beauty products are light years ahead of our own beauty products

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/09/opinion/sunday/korean-beauty-products-america.html

This is the gospel truth. K-skincare is some of the best in the world and it's not expensive. It just takes some time to find the routine that works best for your skin.

Added, no matter how well a topical might work, if you really want to get the job done, nothing beats DOT/Triniti laser treatments, photo facials, Botox and well-placed filler.

The major problem with most people is that they don't practice preventative care: They wait until they see themselves aging and then rush to find a fix.

I only use products with natural ingredients (usually easiest to just look for organic products). I don't think it is good to put chemicals on you skin that cause cancer or who knows what else. Just started using some products with CBD oil, so for so good.

I have never tried to look younger than I am; why pretend? I had fun being a twink when I still was one, but being a mature adult was more fun. And there are perks to being recognized as a senior citizen. If people tell me I look younger than my age, I assume they are referring to my physical activity level rather than my epidermis.

It's a lot of fun being a fit old geezer. A while ago, a young guy asked me if he could take my picture to show his father. The other day, some young guy came up and said,"man, you are JACKED. How old are you?"

Thanks <3 Just added those 3 products to my cart. I'll check out that other site later tonight.

I've used Lab Series for the last 25 years and am very happy with their products. They don't have a perfume-y scent (they actually don't add artificial scent to anything but the shower gel) and work well with my dry, but oily, skin. It also helps that both my parents had young-looking skin and always looked younger than their years, It is nice to have great genes.

A question to the participants: I see a tendency to avoid qualified physicians, dermatologist and plastic surgeons and rely on aestheticians and beauticians.... My friends and me, do exactly the opposite. Thinking of it, we have never even talked about aestheticians, "skin care clinics", "aesthetic clinics", "laser centres" and so on and so forth. We totally forgot these places exist. So my question is why this preference? Because of cost? Not easy access to physicians? Feeling uncomfortable in a Doctor's office?

The thing to keep in mind is that everyone's skin is different. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another. I would suggest starting off with a visit to the dermatologist if your having problems with acne, discoloration, age spots and other issues, however, get a recommended dermatologist and beware of anyone who's going to push a line of beauty products at you. I've gone back to basics and use some of the L'Oreal daily cleansing products and facial scrub. I also use mosturizers from Kiehl's, the longtime NYC based skin care brand, now sold in major department stores, like Macy's, Bloomingdale's and others. They also have several stores in the city (upper East side, Hells's Kitchen, and the "mothership" on 13th St and Third Ave.).

I agree on the suggestion to start with a dermatologist. Kiehl's are good products, but you are aware it is owned by L'Oreal. So its probably Paris based not NYC based...

Yes, a dermatologist is a good thing, especially when it comes to more complex skin issues as we age. Most of what I am posting involves preventative care for guys who are looking for effective cleansing/moisturizing regimen.

I tend to stay away from L'Oreal and Estee Lauder products, as they are well-known in the industry for buying anything decent and cheapening the original formula.

That's why I went the K-skincare route. But it's not 'impossible' to avoid... Like reading nutritional labels, it just takes some research and discipline.

There are many other quality skincare brands that haven't been swallowed up yet: Malin & Goetz, ReVive, Aesop and- one of my favorites- The Ordinary.

I still like some big company brands: SK-II (owned by P&G) continues to make great product.
