I do plan on hiring escorts at least monthly, so it would be a must to have a significant number of escorts in the city. And based on my search on rentmen New mexico cities don’t really have that much of a selection. So philly is still winning, though I’m still looking into central and northern new jersey like the Edison area, which is not to far from nyc.

What is the property tax rate in NJ? Around 6%, right? That would scare me...

All California coastal cities are expensive but you might want to look into the San Diego area. The city is gay friendly the the climate is wonderful.

I'm hesitant to mention Palm Springs because you said you were young. Many of the gay residents of Palm Springs tend to be older. The climate certainly isn't any worse than Las Vegas and it has great proximity to escorts in the greater Los Angeles Area. Year round condo rentals are very affordable and if you are looking to buy you can find all sorts of available places in a wide range of prices. If this area interesting I would suggest you look in both Palm Springs and Cathedral City.

I have always been a great fan of New Mexico. Santa Fe in extremely expensive but as others have mentioned Albuquerque is affordable. I might mention that lately Albuquerque has experienced a major increase in crime due to drugs and gangs. Even with that said there are some great neighborhoods in and around the city. I would definitely agree that the escorts market in the area leaves something to be desired.

I simply can't imagine living in Salt Lake City. In have spent a lot of time in and round the city. I realize that it is a Democratic bastion in the midst of a Republican expanse but it is still Mormon country. I will readily admit that if I "HAD" to live anyplace in Utah it would be Salt Lake City BUT? The winter weather isn't all that great and I can't imagine that the escort market is all that great.

I now you're hating on the south (lol) but I suppose you wouldn't consider Asheville N.C.? don't live there myself, but friends do, and as a gay/gay friendly community it is simply spectacular...Anyway my two cents.

I lived in both Bulletmore, Murderland (Charm City) and Filthadelphia. I loved Baltimore even though Philly has a lot more going for it gay-wise and culturally. Baltimore folk are much more southern in their manners (it is actually south of the Mason-Dixon line) and much more laid back, in my opinion. I suspect that the cost-of-living is about the same in most mid-Atlantic & northeastern states though NJ and NY are probably heavy tax states. Actually, any place along the I-95 corridor is fine if your main criteria is access to gay activities. Every city has its safe and dangerous areas.

When I worked in Philly I lived across the river in south Jersey - the rents were much cheaper and I took the Trailways out of Mt. Laurel (it was $20 round trip) to NYC just about every weekend.

I really want to move to a more gay friendly city, where I can live out my sexuality more. Where I live in the south, escorts, lgbt night clubs, gay villages, etc, are so limited. I know there is no utopia, but I really want a change. If I had the money I would be right in Nyc. Unfortunately I can't afford it. Same with San francisco, most of southern california, washington dc, can’t afford those areas. I’m looking into central and northern new jersey though, at least I would be close to nyc. Are there any other lgbt hotspots can someone recommend that are fairly affordable? I would prefer not in the south, so no to Atlanta or florida, or texas.

Thanks!

Fun stuff. With a little internet research I came up with these.

One hears about Asheville, NC as an inclusive place to live. A quick search for affordability came back with

Based on the Income that you entered, if you are earning $50,000 after tax dollars in CA San Francisco, the comparable after-tax income in NC Asheville is $25,155.

Asheville is still not a cheap place, and I'd guess that is because so many people appreciate living in a gay inclusive, artsy kind of place near the Blue Ridge Mountains.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Iowa City Iowa scored a perfect 100 on the HRC municipal equality index. The population is around 80,000 so not a gay hotspot.

Des Moines, Iowa scored 97. The metro area is 500,000. Lot of arts. A rising hot spot for millennials and techies.

Des Moines is a little more economical than Asheville.

$50,000 after tax dollars in IA Des Moines, the comparable after-tax income in NC Asheville is $54,194.

Huff post live offered insight about gay friendly Des Moines.

I would suggest Chicago. Theres tons to do just about year round from fests, cultural stuff to food. We have an amazing lake and nice beaches . The weather isnt as bad as some say. I've been here for eight years and have yet to really dread winter. If you dress properly and pullup your big girl panties it isnt bad. Being prepared and dressing properly are key. Those that complain are often times the ones who failed to be prepared. Summers are the best! Lazy days by the lake, dippin your toes in the cool water, the beautiful sun rise.....I dont see myself leaving for another four years.

Hugs,

Greg

No one has mentioned the Triangle (Durham/ Raleigh/ Chapel Hill) in North Carolina, which is probably one of the most liberal areas in the South. One of the most active early members of this site retired there around 2005 and declared himself so happy there that he stopped posting. There also seem to be a number of active escorts there.

If hiring escorts regularly is important to you, you should probably check out sites like rent.men to see what the market is like in the places that you are considering. Places like Iowa City usually can't support a variety of escorts, so you will have to either travel to where the escorts are, or import them (at your expense) to you.

I think the OP is down close to Raleigh. Said he was 6 hours down 95 from Philly. Wants out.

If you're that close to DC you should check it out. Sounds like Raleigh is your closest gay life town.

It's called "Filthydelphia" for a reason and a lot more people drive into Kensington than drive out.

But it's cheap, lively, beautiful and central. But absolutely avoid certain areas at all cost. Philly is a city of amazing economic contrasts.

Many of us older regret that we clung to the east coast instead of migrating west. The west really is the best.

Some of the elders need to get out more. They are now building $500k townhouses in Kensington because of the influx of new residents.

Id take a look at Jersey City, NJ. Hopping downtown. one stop to away from NYC.

One stop, yes, but the PATH is horribly overcrowded and has shitty late night service. Jersey City lacks the transit infrastructure for all the new construction.

Yep you nailed it. I’m in Old Raleigh lol. It’s not bad, but my raleigh looks a lot different from others peoples perceptions of Raleigh. I don’t see it as a liberal hotspot. There are many northern transplants here, but I was raised here and it still has an old south good ole boy type vibe. There used to be a somewhat decent escort scene, but now it’s kind of lacking in that department. Mainly twinks and bottoms. Most likely I will be heading up to the greater nyc northern nj area. Lived there for a couple of years. It was expensive but probably worth it in the long run, I love the latino papis.

I guess the giant Light Rail System they built and continue to expand is imaginary. Seats seem real. hmmm.
