I really want to move to a more gay friendly city, where I can live out my sexuality more. Where I live in the south, escorts, lgbt night clubs, gay villages, etc, are so limited. I know there is no utopia, but I really want a change. If I had the money I would be right in Nyc. Unfortunately I can't afford it. Same with San francisco, most of southern california, washington dc, can’t afford those areas. I’m looking into central and northern new jersey though, at least I would be close to nyc. Are there any other lgbt hotspots can someone recommend that are fairly affordable? I would prefer not in the south, so no to Atlanta or florida, or texas.

Thanks!

For you my first suggestions would be Portland, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. Vegas is very, very cheap, has many unfilled jobs, and is a quick cheap jump to LA, San Francisco, and San Diego.

In the east Philadelphia.

Of those I'd think Las Vegas would be the best. Portland has rain and SLC has snow.

And in the Spring and Summer the heat is so intense you can get a third degree burn off the handle of your car. AS to DRY HEAT ---Vegas has a bizzare July and August rainy season --- just about 45 minutes of rain split over late morning and early afternoon--- Just enough to make everyone and everything sticky --- For Vegas Out the door by 7am and in the pool by 11 --- Long Lunch from inside from 12-2 --- Back in the pool till 330 -- shower/dress and HH by 5

If NYC is your top pick, Philadelphia has a huge gay life, is extremely cheap, and under 2 hours drive or train to NYC and DC.

Chicago has a gigantic gay life and is fairly cheap but it's weather isn't suited to humans. Especially from the south.

Surprisingly, gay life in Vegas is a little slow, certainly compared to really big cities. But it's enough to probably win #1.

My #2 would be SLC. Perfect gay city if not huge. Portland is hip and cool but zero sun.

Vegas is best suited for a nighttime lifestyle. Sleep all day when it's hot, out all night when it's cool. You'd be surprised how many people there live and work that schedule.

Of those mentioned philadelphia seems the most like what I’m looking for. I’m in the southeast so I can just take the I-95 and be there in 6 hours. How is the crime comparable to say Baltimore or Newark? Are there places to avoid? I’m a young, big and tall ethnic male, who’s never been a victim of violent crime. Mainly just wondering about property crime. I would like to be able to drive around the city without worrying about getting lost in a bad part of town.

I forgot Denver. More gays probably move there than anywhere now for good reason. Boom town.

It's nothing like the coastal cities, but it has become pretty expensive there. I lived there for 14 years. I go back to visit from time to time and I'm always struck by how beautiful it is. No desire to live there again though. It's interesting that the article cited upthread mentioned Salt Lake City. Ive always liked it, and have had it in the back of my mind as a post San Francisco possibility.

I don't think Denver is inexpensive anymore. I really think Philly is the OP's best bet given the criteria listed. NYC continues to become a playground for the rich and as someone who lives an hour out, it's a freaking CHORE to get there for nightlife as off-hours mass transit sucks and parking is expensive.

If you're that close to DC you should check it out. Sounds like Raleigh is your closest gay life town.

It's called "Filthydelphia" for a reason and a lot more people drive into Kensington than drive out.

But it's cheap, lively, beautiful and central. But absolutely avoid certain areas at all cost. Philly is a city of amazing economic contrasts.

Many of us older regret that we clung to the east coast instead of migrating west. The west really is the best.

I grew up in the east, and took Horace Greeley's advice to "Go west, young man." Never regretted it. I've lived in SF for almost 30 years and it has been go, go, go nonstop.

My first recommendation would be Philadelphia; of really big cities, it is probably the cheapest to live in (that doesn't mean that someone coming from the South would consider it cheap, however). Twenty years ago I would have said Portland, but housing cost there is rising fast. A favorite of mine is Salt Lake City, but the air pollution there is becoming a problem. Someplace inexpensive and very gay friendly, in a low key way, is Albuquerque.

Albuquerque is the second of my possible post-SF cities.

I do plan on hiring escorts at least monthly, so it would be a must to have a significant number of escorts in the city. And based on my search on rentmen New mexico cities don’t really have that much of a selection. So philly is still winning, though I’m still looking into central and northern new jersey like the Edison area, which is not to far from nyc.
