    I’m sorry,  but I don’t follow.
Particularly in the U.S. where the default is “Call for rates,” it’s unreasonable to say that “if you’re not booking an appointment, why are you contacting?”  There are lots of fair reasons to make contact that aren’t a guaranteed booking, including rate (where not stated), position, safety, particular limits, “are your travel plan set in stone,” availability, etc.
If a potential client contacts you and says that they would like to book an appointment at time X and you’ve already scheduled another client at that time, I assume that you wouldn’t say that you’re double-booked.  Or that if you proposed time Y to the disappointed client who was unavailable at that time, you wouldn’t say that he’d booked you for time Y.
In any event, this is a tacit acknowledgment that contacting ≠ booking.

Nothing is booked until the date, time and location are confirmed and agreed. Otherwise it’s just an enquiry. Clients ask me if I’m available on certain days that might align with their travel plans. This is sensible as I might be away or busy so I understand why clients check. But we agree that until they definitively book the time might be taken by someone else.

I think your provider was unprofessional. Probably annoyed after a series of cancellations which I can empathise with but it’s still not right to take out his annoyance on you. It’s an inherent problem of his modus operandi and he should either adjust his approach by taking deposits before travelling or simply get out of the business if his model causes him that much trouble. You were generous offering to pay him half.

I agree with you, an appointment is not booked until a date, time and place have been confirmed.
Recently I was traveling and there were a couple of clients in your position of not having full control of their schedules. Both told me they'd understand if I would be making other arrangements given their inability to commit to a date and time. I thought that was fine. In the end I was able to accommodate one once his schedule stabilized, but not the other.
It can be difficult for the providers when prospective clients are not able to confirm, but it also goes with the territory. This is true of any service trade, or sales for that matter - the deal isn't sealed until it's fully confirmed. If someone can't deal with that, they should find another line of work that offers a predictable salary.
Your policy for paying for canceled appointments is very respectable btw.

I say it's the provider's job to keep track of time.  He's the professional in the room.  Your only job is to relax and have fun.

I can’t speak for the whole of Europe and I wouldn’t assume that Europe is homogeneous. But I can talk about London because it’s where I live and work, and I’ll say that generally you’ll have no problem in London. The city is the most multi cultural in Europe and is, despite what some media commentators would like to imply, a very welcoming and accepting city of all ethnicities.

I haven't quite done this, but I have tipped in appreciation of a provider providing an excellent time at a lower rate than others and being willing to inconvenience himself for me
I saw an escort in Paris last year and had a fantastic time.  He charges a lower rate if you come to him.  During a more recent trip, I arranged another meeting and, although he wasn't able to host, after I volunteered to host, he said that he said that he would charge the incall rate.  True to form, he arrived and showed me a good time.  I added an extra amount because I knew that I'd have a good time and because he'd volunteered to take the incall rate for an outcall.

Hlparx reacted to Jamie21 in How to bring up more with your masseur.
Sensual masseurs (or erotic masseurs) are sex workers - I prefer to use that description than prostitute because I think it carries less baggage - so anyone hiring a sensual masseur is doing the same thing as hiring an escort. You’re hiring to satisfy sexual needs. Ok so it will include massage, which if done correctly (sensual massage) will, and is intended to arouse. It’s a seduction. A masseur will have restrictions on what he or she may do sexually but then escorts will too. So it just comes down to a) what will he do sexually and b) what is his price. Clients should nail both those things down. But let’s be clear we’re not talking about sensual masseurs and escorts being different things, they’re the same thing (sex worker) which only differs by degree. I speak as someone who has done both jobs.

As a client, the one exception to this would be for a traveling provider that I've seen before contacting me once to notify me he will be returning to town, especially if that is ahead of his posting his ad so I can get a priority booking as a returning customer.

Oh dear this is becoming like Twitter. I avoid expressing any kind of opinion on there because it just degenerates into ad hominem insults. I just post thirst trap pics and videos! Even those attract some strange comments sometimes.

I suppose in a forum called ‘ask a provider’ it’s reasonable to assume most of the replies should be from providers. I try to give my provider perspective but I am conscious of trying not to offend potential clients with things I might say. I think on balance though it’s positive to contribute here because a genuinely held opinion put respectfully is likely to be positive for business. I mean if you don’t like my views or position you’re probably not going to be a good client are you? So no loss there. Best you feel an affinity with me because then it’s likely to be a good session. It’s kind of like putting heavily airbrushed (or even worse, faked) pics on your profile to attract clients. When they see the real you they’ll only be disappointed.
I like to hear what clients think about the ‘ask a provider’ questions though so I think it’s good for clients to post things on the thread. However the client comments do show that there are some big misunderstandings about what life is like as a provider. I don’t work 2 hours a day and make $100k net a year. It’s at least 3 hours a day……
Before I started doing this work I too had those misunderstandings (and I used to hire) so I can see where they come from. But now having been doing this kind of work for about 5 years I also see the other side. So clients, if a provider says ‘this is how it is from my perspective’ then he’s doing so from a position of greater knowledge than you (even if you’ve been hiring for years) and you shouldn’t say he’s wrong because you haven’t walked in his shoes have you?
You’re entitled to your opinion of course, but I know who’s opinion on the job from the provider perspective I will take more note of.

Any man who runs his own business can charge as little or as much as he likes.
My knee-jerk reaction to anyone charging several times the market rate is that he doesn't enjoy his work, charging a lot of $ is a tactic in the strategy of avoiding the work.  I suppose that's because, nearly 24 years later I still enjoy what I do.  But, so?
When he was already a multimillionaire from his porn company, I know that when Lukas would occasionally dip his toe back into the escort pool he always loved swimming in, he would employ two tactics, charge $500/hour, twice the market rate at the time (10 years ago), to keep away the masses, but keep the rate reasonable (he was a star after all and could charge more, hot as ever into his 40s and 50s, and certainly did not need the money) so he could actually do the work.
I have no idea who Maddox is, and my instinct is probably wrong since his reviews, if you use a proxy server to read them, are excellent.   I guess, maybe, wealthier clients are more fun?  More reliable?  Whatever, it's all up to him.

My stance as well. I wasn't born into money, and that worldview will never change.
When I see ads like this (really hot guy for a really big fee), I just think of the sexier men I met, and how their fees were so much lower.

He does it because he can.  Supply/demand, I'm assuming.
The lesson here is that not every escort is for every client.
He didn't waste your time and immediately made it clear who his client base is.  I respect that.
Never begrudge an escort because they can.  Just move on.
