Remarkable movie, powerfully engaging evocation of war's cruelty and insanity with (and despite) almost no background on any character. The scenography and cinematography are incredible. I didn't expect to like it, but was knocked out by the film-making.

A picture of the Xray of the bowling pin in place is quite well known in the medical field. Working as a medical student in the ER at St Vincent's in Greenwich Village, NYC in the 70's, foreign objects in the anus were fairly common. The oddest one I saw was a flashlight which was inadvertently turned on as an attempt was made to remove it. Usual story, given: "I slipped and fell on it."
 
Also saw a couple brought in on a stretcher in flagrante delicato. A severe case of vaginal spasm had clamped his penis in place.

Well said...Many of us come to these boards with a variety of life's experiences. Some are educated experiences, some make assumptions and use them as fact. You have to weed through all of that to find truth. It's messy business sometimes.

There were a couple earlier episodes of the series that discussed Robert Cecil's father (William) who had had the same position as Robert Cecil but who was dismissed from court when he discovered that Mary Queen of Scots (Queen Elizabeth's cousin) was plotting against the Queen. William tried to get Queen Elizabeth to sign a death warrant for Mary so that she could be executed for her part in the plot but the Queen refused to do so (probably thinking that William would carry it out any way) and she would have some sort of plausible deniability. Mary was executed and the Queen Elizabeth was allegedly livid and subsequently dismissed William from court. It is said that the Queen did not want to sign the order as it would be imply that regicide (as Mary was a queen) was OK.
