I agree that they should travel, see the world, meet different sorts of people, etc. Turning it into a search for validation might not be the best motive. I remember reading about the experiences of some American blacks when visiting Africa in the 60s and 70s. Understandably, t h e y had very high expectations and were disappointed to find out that they didn't have as much in common with black Africans as they thought they would.
