Some of the preparation for a pandemic is a lot like preparation for any kind of widespread disaster, like an earthquake: food, water, pet supplies, toilet paper, emergency medical kit, extra batteries for equipment that uses them, a full tank of gas in the car, generator, etc. I am always prepared to be cut off from supplies and aid for at least a couple of weeks.

Yep. 40 years ago my wallet was lost/stolen/lifted (you choose) on the DC metro.
 
When I got home, I remembered I'd had a blank check in the wallet so I called the bank and they recommended closing the account. "Just come in and we'll open another" they said, so I did that.
 
When I got there they asked to see ID. I reminded them mine had just been lost. They told me "you can just go up to DMV, it's only a few miles away". I asked how I should pay for it? Writing a check on the account they just closed? It was an entire cycle of "you can't get there from here".
 
These days I do keep a stash of cash, as others have suggested, and I have photocopies of front AND BACK of all cards in my wallet. The front has account numbers, but the back has the important numbers to call in an emergency.

Since many denizens of this site are "of a certain age", we've probably outlived more than a few of them. As Charlie mentioned, the AIDS epidemic cut a wide swath through our community. Substance abuse and suicide have also taken a toll, not to mention cancers, traffic accidents. And a few got involved in rough situations.
 
I'm usually more surprised when I learn one of my formers is alive and healthy than learning they have passed.
 
I'm still in touch with many of them, and wish I was in touch with others. And then there are those where you just don't know. And that's how it's supposed to be.

I've lived in the DC, NYC, Chicago and LA areas and rode public transit in all of them without incident. You do need to stay alert, AS YOU ALWAYS SHOULD in a city of any size, no matter where you are.
 
Heck, the small midwestern college town I live in now isn't a picnic if you're not paying attention. If you don't lock your car, it'll probably get rummaged through. If you don't lock your bike, it'll probably disappear.

Trying to reschedule a two week major tournament would be a nightmare for almost everyone concerned, given the rigidity of the entire world tennis schedule for the year. Unless a national emergency is declared by the government, it is unlikely to happen. Probably the only way to reschedule would be to move it to the end of the year, when it used to be played, but that would mean playing the 2020 and 2021 tournaments only about one month apart. More likely is that it would be like the 2016 Rio Olympics, where many individuals chose to pull out because of worry about the conditions in Rio, but the event went on as scheduled without them.

AARP members receive those invitations several times/week. I go a couple times/year and ignore the sales pitch just because it's a good meal at a restaurant I may not have tried or might not be in my regular rotation.
