This reminds me of a situation I found myself in a hundred years ago. He isn't telling anyone to find a $50 hotel room.  He is offering you a discount on his rate if he meets you in a hotel opposed to your home.   Even if you use points and the room costs you nothing, he will still discount his rate by $50.  Consider it a safety discount on his part.
