Perhaps the greatest controversy surrounding sexuality revolves around Richard the LionHearted and King Philip of France. There are differing opinions as to the nature of their relationship. It is widely accepted that they shared a bed, but defenders of the "not gay" segment state that it was common practice for people to sleep together for warmth and that sleeping with an ally was a political way of showing trust, literally getting in bed with someone. Others point out that Richard, though he married another, was engaged to Philips sister Alice. Alice may also have been the mistress of Richard's father, Henry II. In any case, two young powerful men, sleeping in the same bed leads to me think that though they literallu crossed swords in battle years later, that in their youth, these two were crossing swords figuratively.

Prince George of Greece and Denmark (husband of Pss Marie Bonaparte) was the lover of his much older uncle, Prince Valdamar of Denmark (husband of Pss Marie d’Orleans). They hooked up a family reunions, and Prince Valdamar’s wife had to plainly admonish George's new and pregnant wife of the “intense bond” between uncle and nephew, and that family had learnt never to interrupt the pair’s final 2 days alone together, to put up with their demonstrable tears upon departure, and the inevitable illness of George for days after parting.

FreshFluff, why did you change your avatar to a Pomeranian? I also noticed that you are now an Earl, but you should properly be a Countess.

Thanks for noticing my new avi. When it comes to tiny floofy animals, I don't discriminate.

As far as titles go, "Countess" is correct but "Princess" would be the most appropriate.

Rumors have long swirled around the king of Cambodia. (He was once the butt of a practical joke where his head was photo-shopped into a scene of gay porn. The authorities were not amused.) About the rumors, this article about the king notes:

And when describing the monarch, journalists rarely exclude the phrase “lifelong bachelor” or “music-loving bachelor,” or something to that effect, perhaps with the same intent that British tabloids once employed the euphemism “confirmed bachelor” with a figurative nod.

It has been reported that Prince Edward will assume the title of Duke of Edinburgh on Phillip's passing.

Yes, I believe this has been officially announced from the Palace. However, Edward will technically have to wait until both of his parents die. Prince Charles will (as oldest son) inherit the dukedom when Prince Phillip passes. Then when Charles becomes king the title will "merge with the crown". If the Queen dies before Phillip, it will merge upon Phillip's death.

By custom that's the point at which the title can be re-issued. Of course, the Queen could create a second dukedom of Edinburgh (or other dukedom) for Edward at any time. But that doesn't appear to be the plan.

It's interesting to note that the Royal Dukedom's are still created with the provision that only males can inherit. So, the dukedom of York will become extinct when Prince Andrew dies since he only has daughters. Edward's titles can pass to his son Viscount Severn but not to his daughter Louise.

Does anyone think that Prince Charles will abdicate when Queen Elizabeth passes so that the more attractive prince will inherit and have a very lengthy reign? I suppose he won't as he seems to be better liked now that Diana is being less and less remembered.

Poor Charles, like his ancestor Edward VII, has been training all his life to be king, while waiting for his mother to die, so he ought to at least get a couple of years to enjoy the job.

He could take a cue from the current Pope. Serve for a period of time and then resign, rather than die on the job.

Well, unfortunately the only good popes are Italian popes. I know, I know, people will respond that Francis is Argentinian, however, he is really Italian - both because he is Italian by heritage (Jorge Bergoglio) and his parents were Italian immigrants. Also, much of Argentina, particularly Buenos Aires, is Italian. So he adopted the Italian ways. The reason I say that the only good popes are Italian is because I know that Italians can't quite obey rules so are more apt to understand when people stray a bit, e.g., so you sucked a couple of cocks, here's your Communion wafer. That contrasts with the last Polish and German popes. OK, I'm biased but that's the way it is. ;)
