Pissoirs were once a frequent sight in Paris, and Amsterdam. They didn't require flushing mechanisms, and only required a drain. They kept guys from from pissing on the walls of buildings, and in the streets. I don't recall seeing them often on my recent trips to Paris. I remember a sign at the entrance to one in Amsterdam that basically said "perverts forbidden". I believe the one in San Francisco was installed because guys were pissing on the buildings and trees, and the people in the neighborhood were complaining about the stink.

But what about our sisters? Unless...

This reminds me of the unisex/female American Standard Sanistand urinals that we had in one of the newer dorms in college.

At least this won't happen in urinal like that.

I don't know why the French got rid of the pissoirs! They were very practical and convenient. I used them frequently in my early Parisian visits as a young man. They were on the streets in many locations and drained right into the sewer. voilà! Pas de problem.

There were also many in Milan, Italy when I grew up there. They were called "Vespasiani", from Roman Emperor Vespasian (who built the Colosseum..), and some I remember were known to be especially at night cruising spots for naughty men. They were common throghout Italy and other Mediterrenean Countries.

This is one of the very few remained:

Question for @xafnndapp or others who have recently been to Italy or Europe:

Do they still have Squat Toilets as they did in some places years ago?!?! They consisted simply of porcelain footprints and a squat-and-aim hole. They were also known as Turkish style toilets.

I personally prefer the " throne approach"! ;)

From Mike's article:

"The self-cleaning urinal, which can be used by three men at a time, is controlled by a remote and pops up Friday and Saturday nights. In the morning it retracts back into the footpath."

Very interesting. Thanks very much for posting. Wish I could give more than just one like.:):)

I used to use pissoirs when I went to school in Paris. They smelled bad, but other than that were fine. Far more hazardous was all the dog shit in the streets.

I'm taking out of town friends (straight couple) to Delores Park this afternoon. There has been complaints about the outdoor urinal and that it isn't private enough. The guy in the picture is on the opposite side so I hope he's not pissing. They do have vines planted so in time all of the metal fencing will be covered with them and will be more private. I am overall disappointed in the design, I expected something more like the ones you see in Europe, still though, it's better than people pissing on the MUNI tracks like they use to.

From a decorative standpoint, maybe we should think about something more artsy? Maybe even musical?

When employed as musical instruments, I believe these are called "Wagner Tubas", and it wouldn't surprise me if there were musicians or musical politicians incensed enough at the composer after whom they were named, that they would be ever so glad to use them in this fashion.

Should Dirk Caber ever pass through these parts again, he might be willing to comment . . .

(He's pretty open about his lower brass connections).
