Penn station in NYC does not have a Starbucks and the bathrooms are disgusting. Haha. I said I'd never have a lay over in NYC again after my bus got into an accident three months ago in a tunnle durrimg rush hour. So I decided to take the train. Smooth sailing so far. Boston bound for 430. Two hours and I wanted food, any suggestions, locals..?

I'm not surprised. Penn Station is kind of a pit. It has low ceilings and feels so claustrophobic and cramped like an underground animal dwelling, unlike Grand Central Station , one of the most beautiful buildings ever.

Get yourself out of there as quickly as possible and have a great day. Wish you were on your way to see me!

Soon babe, soon. There's this smell of shit, every. Fucking. Where.

If you are in Cambridge, the Lone Star Taco Bar has a very nice brunch daily. I assume that since you are posting at 10:00 AM you want something soon. Oh and it is relatively inepensive.

I'm going to Google this and see if I can afford time. I leave at 1230

Yes, it's disgusting but the biggest crime was demolishing the old Penn Station.

Holly shit Sheridan!!!! That is so much more glorious than this building. That was a stupid move. Someone got paid off for that. What an elabroate and beautiful building.... This one... Is an eye sore. I am able to go into the Amtrak waiting room (High Tier points member) but I like being with the other poor people, plus I don't travel in dress cloths. Jeans T and a hoodie. I used to wear my jewelry and dress nice until I got robbed (in my home town as well) getting off a mid high bus and walking to terminal tower to catch a train and it happend so fast, they were saying how easy I made it for myself to be targeted, so never fucking again. Let's not forget my size either. My parents wanted me to get a permit to carry a small firearm for myself, but I believe all life is precious, even awful people, we all have a purpose and NO one has the right to end someone else's life, no matter the terms. Anyone can change, just a matter of the right time, situation and with enough TLC.... Lemme stop. Lol

I thought Cambridge was in Boston, is there one in NYC as well?

Yeah its like "zones" or "neighborhoods" like how NYC has time square. Like Cleveland has "Ohio City" its still NYC by map definition and Ohio city is still Cleveland, just a way to pay higher rent. Lol.

PS purplecow, it doesn't open until 1130-12 I called and asked so I'll miss that :'(

well, you brought out the history nerd in me, Brian and marylander.....

I was walking thru Penn Station a couple months ago and did already know it used to be one of the grand old railroad stations.....a lot of history there....torn down in the early 1960s to build Madison Square Garden and an office building (and a revamped train station, of course!)......

for those interested.....

Yes it's DISGUSTING. And a Shanda that it's oft ppls first impression and gleaning your impression of NYC from Penn S is like taking your impression of the state of Michigan from FLINT:eek: EVERYONE agrees the tearing down of the orig was a CRIME. Sadly we didn't have Mrs. Onasis to spearhead saving it as she did when when our amazing Grand Central Station was slated for the wrescking ball :) But it's easy in hindsight to say now HOW couldn't they see the value??? When I was 19 in my first apt an aunt and uncle gave me an old steamer trunk they said use as a table etc. To ME it was some old junky thing and I eventually dragged it out and put it on the curb on W81st St. (it was a Louis Vuitton WITH a little fold down writing desk) We all do dumb shit o_O

Demolishing significant buildings is not limited to NYC. Many beautiful Georgian and Victorian buildings were demolished in Sydney. One which narrowly escaped was the Queen Victoria Building that covers an entire city block;

Sydney Central Station is another landmark.

The culprit responsible for destroying the original Penn Station (and much else, along with what good he did) was one Robert Moses. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Moses

I like to imagine him condemned to a Hell modeled on the current Penn Station.

That's the problem nowadays. oh its outdated, demolish that beautiful building and put up a modern (at the time) monstrosity). They should have just renovated and upkept.

Even more beautiful on the inside. I'm looking around and would love to see that instead of what I see. I walked passed a man digging in the trash, I noticed he had no shoes on... His feet were blistered and bloody, he was counting change.

.. I ask him what size shoe he waw, he didn't even know.... I took off my boat shoes and said Merry Christmas, I got out of my suitcase my Nike's and put them on and laced them up, my boat shoes (size 13) fit him.. He said here, and put his hand out and gave me the few pennies nicklea and quarters he was counting and said "Nothing is free and you will take this money" he walked off and all I could do was smile. Even though I'm out about 65.35 cents roughly, him handing me all the money he owned was heart warming, I just can't take the thought of anyone being barefoot anywhere outside. people around me stared at me in disgust but I would of done it for them (if I had thought the shoe would fit) I wish he didn't give me his change, so he could of ate.... But I wasn't gonna demand he take it since his additude was poor and he seemed admimnt I keep the change (totaled 85 cents)

Tearing it down made short-term economic sense. Once an older building has become decrepit, it is cheaper and faster to pull it down and rebuild. Without public pressure and a visionary owner with deep pockets, it would never have been saved. The railroads were already in trouble themselves. To expect both historic stations to be saved is expecting too much.

Full disclosure: I was in Penn Sation recently (May). I found it dull and confusing to walk around, but not smelly. Only the major areas of Grand Central, which I walked through recently and which has its rundown areas too, are better. The platforms at Penn Station are nicer.
