Newly Posted September 1, 2013 Share Posted September 1, 2013 I'm not sure if this is serious, but as a Jew who wasn't born in the US I was always taught that being Jewish was determined solely by your mother being Jewish. Whether you were circumcised or went to Temple just made you observant or non-observant, but it had nothing to do with being Jewish, that's your race and ethnicity, it's not at all like being a Christian which is accomplished by baptism. Of course, this may just be an American Jewish thing, I have been amazed at how many American Jews assume that all Jews are Ashkenazim and totally forget about the Sephardim. I may be wrong, but the Right Of Return in Israel agrees with me. People also need to keep in mind that although being Jewish in the States isn't a big deal, many of us in other parts of the world aren't so lucky. In many places such as the former communist countries practicing our religion including observing the Days of Awe or things such as circumcising sons was asking for a death sentence or, if you were lucky, horrific discrimination.
