Okay...time for another deep, thought-provoking question....

Name a word that everytime you hear it or think of it, you end up chuckling.

I like: Fahrvergnügen

Is Fahrvergnügen a word?

Enquiring ESL'rs want to know!

From Wikipedia: German term meaning "driving enjoyment" in English (from fahren, "to drive," and Vergnügen, "enjoyment"). It was used in a Volkswagen advertising campaign some years back. (I always wondered if it was a real word too.)

Schadenfreude (happiness at the misfortune of others) is another German word we've sort of adopted. There's even a song about it:

It is German and was used in a Volkswagen commercial. I am not sure it is a real German word but as far as i know, there is not a English meaning to this word other than the translation. I see Deej has beat me to the Schadenfreude post as well as this. Too fast for me deej.

Best part of the song Nicky: Schadenfreude, is that some kind of Nazi word.

Gary: Yes it is German meaning happiness at the misfortune of others

Nicky: Gee, that really is German.

As one who drives a WV Golf, I can convey the joy ... :)

Although we don't use this word in our everyday vocabulary, it does have a meaning ...

Similar to Deej I thought immediately about "Schadenfreude"

"Being on the elevator when somebody shouts "Hold the door!"

"No!!!"

Schadenfreude!

"Fuck you lady, that's what stairs are for!"

Nazi ... for sure

Funny how it is often German words that have this effect. For me it is "Gemuetlichkeit", which means "cosyness", but it always conjures the image of a chubby, aging pervert with a bad toupee, in a sitting room full of overstuffed Biedermeier furniture, and lots of Victorian bric-a-brac, sipping "cafe mit schlag" while daydreaming about some adolescent thug he saw on the street on the way home from the pastry shop.

For me, it would be those funny Jewish (Yiddish) words like "yenta," "plotz," and "schmendrick."

Same here. Yiddish seems designed from the ground up to amuse. I once saw a Mercedes with the license plate TSURIS and laughed all the way home. :)
