Who is going to the Super Bowl folks?? Jets and Vikings are my picks.

And what about the brouhaha over Farve 'running up the board' over Cowboys in last 2 minutes. Romo and crew would have done the same thing!

Oh, I thought you were going to ask whether I'd rather have sex with Sanchez or Favre. Sanchez is cuter, but I'll bet Favre is a better top.

And I thought you were talking about Rick Sanchez on CNN - one more hunky Latino I'd love to fuck in the mouth, How else can you get him to shut-up?

Can someone explain to me why Americans pronounce this guy Favre's name as "Farve"? This thread is titled "Farve" and then someone spells it Favre. I believe his name is spelled "Favre", which is a French name and pronounced 'favra' as in lava with an r. Why do Americans corrupt the beautiful language that is French?

No rules for names?

I was always under the impression that the 'rules' of pronunciation do not apply to proper names. Pronunciations changes over time, also. In this case, I think the authority lies with the family using the name. The name may have been French originally, but it now belongs to the family.

300 years ago French was even less standardized than English. Who knows what regional dialect the original Favre family spoke. Besides, self-respecting rednecks rarely use two syllables when one will do. :p

for the same reason we pronounce Versailles, KY, Dubois, WY, Chartres Street in New Orleans, St. Louis, MO, et al, as we do....

I won't even go into how we've corrupted the Spanish language here in the Southwest...

conventional local pronunciation evolves however the locals deem it.....

The correct French pronunciation of Favre (Fahv-ruh, approximately--the exact sound of the second syllable doesn't exist in English)) seems difficult and unnatural to most Anglophones, especially in the Deep South, where Brett was reared, so it probably evolved into the more comfortable "Farve."

And Arab, AL.

We're also burdened by contrivances like GPS systems that "speak" driving directions. What they do with names like "Tierra Rejada" is almost magical. You miss your turn by the time you figure out what they said.

O my god!

We are talking about two of the sexiest, hunkiest men alive and suddenly we worried about pronunciation. As I fantasize about these two I can honestly sqay I never said "Gee, I wonder how he pronounces his last name"!
