samhexum Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 Judge & Ohtani both enter the final weekend third in batting average, 7 points away from a triple crown. Ohtani got to 400 total bases; Judge needs 8. Ohtani has 97 extra base hits, Judge has 95.

+ WilliamM Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 Bill Clinton listened o Cardinal games wen he was living in The deep South The cArds radio stations were very strong I could listen in Philadelphia
+ Charlie Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 If you could hear the Cardinals' radio station in Philly, then it certainly should have been easy enough to hear in Little Rock, which is less than half the distance from St. Louis. The Cards had pretty much a monopoly in the South for pro baseball listeners, since there were no teams on the East Coast south of the Washington Senators, who were perpetual losers. Southerners who didn't root for the St. Louis teams probably rooted for the Baltimore Orioles.

samhexum Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 Stat of the day… Corbin Burnes was removed after giving up a hit on the first pitch of the ninth inning yesterday. The last time a starting pitcher pitched into the ninth inning in a one to nothing loss in the first game of his team's postseason, the winning pitcher in the game was Babe Ruth. That was part of the babe's 29 consecutive scoreless inning streak in the World Series, which was the postseason record until Whitey Ford had 32 straight scoreless innings. The Tigers were 10 games out of the wildcard race on August 10. The Astros were 10 games out of first place in the AL West on June 18. Only one other time in history have two teams that have been at least 10 games out of playoff positioning during a season met in that postseason… In 1973, the reds were 11 games out on June 30 and the Mets were 12 1/2 games out in July. See if this sounds familiar… The Mets fall behind two to nothing in the first inning of a postseason game, then come back to take a 3 to 2 lead, only to blow that lead and fall behind again, then come back and win... With the winning pitcher being an up-and-coming 22-year-old named Nolan Ryan. The Padres have never had a regular season game in which they threw a shut out and had at least 12 strikeouts with no walks. Yesterday they became the first team ever to do that in a postseason game.
+ purplekow Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 Mets Brewers game was tension filled scoreless until the seventh when Brewers hit homers on consecutive pitches. Mets get to the ninth with 2 hits. A walk, a single with one out and a three run homer from Alonso who was having a miserable month. He potentially was having his last at bat as a Met and last at bat for the Mets for the year. In frustration the Brewer pitcher hits Winker with a pitch. Winker has been egging his former team and had a shouting match with Adames in the first game. He steals second and scores on a single for an important insurance run. One out and a man on first leads to a double play ball and the game belongs to the Mets. This game was amazing and that homer was like CPR and a cardioversion for the Mets team. Even if they lose to the Phils, this has been an Amazing year for the Mets. But they better not lose to the Phils, we hate the Phils.

samhexum Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 I predict the Royals in four, the Padres in five and on paper, the guardians and Phillies in five, but in the actual games, the Mets and tigers in five. I don't think any remaining American League team would beat any remaining NL team, though KC has the best shot.
TonyDown Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 What would be a more compelling, dramatic World Series? Enlighten us! Yankees vs Phillies or Yankees vs Mets

Royals-Mets rematch of 2015. Or Royals-Padres. I think you are making a Royal mistake with KC. They were under 500 if not for 12 wins against the White Sox. Tigers also took advantage of the Sox being in their division. The Twins were just so bad that even the Sox could not get them to the playoffs. Yankees on paper are the best team in the AL and Dodgers and Phils in the NL. With that said, I like San Diego beating the Mets for the pennant and the Guardians losing to the Yankees. Hate to say it as a Met fan of more than 50 years, but I think the Padres win the World Series 4 to 2 with Soto and Judge hitting homers in only two games and the pitching staff of the Yankees folding.
samhexum Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 (edited) 1 hour ago, purplekow said: I think you are making a Royal mistake with KC. They have the best rotation of any American League playoff team and their bullpen underwent an amazing transformation, even as the team fell apart, in September. It had been a weakness for almost the whole season and now has coalesced into a strength, even though it's not as good as Cleveland's and not as versatile as Detroit's. They play great defense. And they have Bobby Witt, Jr. They are built to win low-scoring games. As for the Yankees, he typed disgustedly with a sigh, they have the worst bullpen of any of the remaining teams in either league, a one man starting rotation, and an offense with seven stiffs and two superstars, one of whom doesn't hit in the postseason. Sorry… six stiffs, one decent to good offensive player who is horrific defensively, and two superstars, one of whom doesn't hit in the postseason. I'd love it if they pull off the most dominant sweep in baseball history and make me look like a colossal moron, but I don't think they have it in them. I certainly don't think it's impossible that they win; they just don't inspire much confidence for me. Talent-wise, they are the best team left in the American League. It's really just box scores and game recaps for me at this point, since the only game that I have watched since they were knocked out of the 2022 playoffs was Jasson Dominguez's debut last year. I was so disgusted by the greed on both sides during the lockout in 2022 that I didn't watch anything for the first quarter of the season, but that was the year the Yankees got off to an amazing start so I finally got sucked in and then when they fell apart and started playing like shit I was sucked in by Judge's pursuit of the Home Run record. But by the end of that season, they had gotten so boring and lifeless that for the last week or two I basically kept my television on with no sound, kept track of where the game was on my computer, and just went to watch his at bats, so that when they predictably got knocked out of the playoffs right away I just basically realized that I don't enjoy watching baseball anymore. I like following it, reading about it, talking and writing about it, but not watching it anymore. Edited October 5, 2024 by samhexum because I needed something else to do when I couldn't make the incredibly tough decision about whether to watch Grey's Anatomy or Chicago Fire.
