Cross-country trip!

No idea what forum this belongs in, so i'll start here

Background: i work in a special needs NYC high school and am inundated with people and noise all day every day (and i do love it) --but we do get 2 months off and i have always wanted to do a cross country road trip.

  • As of now my planned route is more or less:
  • NY - Columbus, OH
  • St. Louis
  • Oklahoma City
  • Albuquerque
  • Phoenix
  • Palm Springs

Just wondering 1) what guys think of this routing, 2) if you would like to suggest any local landmarks (bars, clubs, saunas, masseurs, escorts) that will make the trup even more memorable.

I know this is a big ask, but I appreciate it all!

My only advice is to extend your trip a bit to a final destination on the Pacific coast.  It doesn't matter where -- LA, Santa Barbara, San Diego, whatever tickles your fancy -- so that you get the full "from sea to shining sea" experience.

When I drove from Boston to Las Vegas, I made it a point to have lunch at a clam shack on Boston Harbor a few days before heading out.  When I got to LV, I remember thinking it would have been cool to continue on to LA because 1) I always wanted to see the iconic Santa Monica Pier and 2) it would have given me the feeling of truly driving cross-country.  But since Las Vegas was my final destination, the 10 additional hours to LA (round-trip) would have been silly.

For your sake (and for all of us), I hope that Dick's Cabaret in Phoenix reopens by the time you make your trip, even though chances are awfully slim.

If you are traveling in July and August, skip Palm Springs and Phoenix. Nobody is home then as it is too hot.

yes, please let us know what months you're planning this for........and if you have other interests along the way other than bars, masseurs, etc......are the cities you've listed mandatory because of visiting friends/relatives in them?......thanks

I know this is a big ask, but I appreciate it all!

St Louis:  Be sure to order ribs.  Wherever you go there, they are usually awesome.  If you're a Judy Garland fan or history fan, you may like to visit Forest Park, the site of the 1904 World's Fair.  The north side has a memorial to President Jefferson with a small museum about the World's Fair.

Oklahoma City: I found it completely boring; even the gay bars.  If you have the time, travel instead to Dallas.  Visit the Tin Room in Dallas.  Plus, there are plenty of recommendations on this site for masseurs in Dallas.  Not so much for Oklahoma City.

Palm Springs: Stay at one of the several gay clothing optional hotels.  July-September can be brutal.

I haven't done a trip like that but your itinerary looks much more logical than some of the ones that are posted in RM... lol.  You could do it the way some providers evidently do it:

  • NYC, NY
  • Boise, ID
  • Pensacola, FL
  • Duluth, MN
  • Riverside, CA
  • Barrow, AK
  • Leadville, CO

And with a one day stop in Kinshasa between your day in Duluth and your day in Riverside.

I assume that this is a driving trip, so I hope you are not planning to do the trip as non-stop between those places,  or you are going to be too tired to do anything else. I would also vary the route somewhat west of St. Louis if it doesn't interfere with something important to you about Oklahoma City, and instead head through Kansas City, Denver and Las Vegas en route to Palm Springs. If you are interested in things like Presidential history in this election year, you can see the Lincoln memorabilia around Springfield, and the Truman and Eisenhower Libraries in Missouri and Kansas. If you must go to Albuquerque, the route south from Denver is more scenic, and I agree with Njguy2 that Santa Fe is worth the stop. Lucky is sort of joking, but Palm Springs really is hotter than hell in July and August, so most residents flee to the mountains or the coast, and BSR is right that it would be a shame to travel all the way from NY but skip the last hundred miles to the Pacific. What gay man would pass up LA and SF?

Also, check out Oliver's postings about his drives here to Palm Springs from Columbus with Epigonos  and jawjatek.
