Then I saw it was $55 for a 90 minute tour of that ugly ass monstrosity of a house…. I’ll be in the garden waiting.

I thought the paid tour was well worth the price (I did it a long time ago, around 2007).  I had previously done the free gardens, but apart from the house itself, the tour includes many other landscaped parts of the estate.  The pictures in @foxy's post give you an idea.  Back then, it was imperative to reserve well in advance,  at least in high tourist season...IIRC, we went online the moment the dates we were interested in went on sale.
